Total Eclipse

Basilisk

Recommended Posts

Here's a group that has released a TON of material - four albums (at least - throw in the Antidote's material and it's at what - six?) and yet I don't find that they have more than a handful of really stellar songs... but the ones that excel - wow. Some of the enduring classics of Goa trance, unmatched by anyone else. I've not heard a tune like Can't Do That with it's frantic emotional chords and twisted bass shifts, and while Transparent Mind does hold some similarities to other old school Goa tracks it's still a total KILLER in the true sense of the word. Ever heard that loud out at a party? I've played it out a few times and it totally tore things apart (who sez old school has no power because the production is weaker?!)...

So, what else rocks?

The Crucible (classic)

Le Lotus Bleu (which mix though?)

The Furnace (last half isn't as good, but that first run - whoa!)

Aliens (sooooooooooo retro - I still love this one)

Chaotic Circus (heh heh too fucked up not to make the list)

A lot of the rest though - hmm. I'd argue that TE have a lot of verrrrry mediocre stuff in their discography. Album-wise I really enjoy all of Delta Aquarids as a listening experience - but any other? No thanks.

Your opinion?

I think TE's 'Violent Relaxation' (both cds) is very good piece of work.

They have really outdone theirselves with tracks like "the furnace" or "chaotic circus" and I couldn't say rest of the songs are bad either. :)

Guest Le Lotus Bleu

If you listen carefully to Waiting For A New Life & Le lotus Bleu you'll notice it's the same melodic structure.

How about

Transparent Mind, Space Clinic, Blue Galaxie, Black Body Radiation & 10 Years In Trance,

Basilisk?

I was just about to ask you why haven't you mentioned WAITING FOR A NEW LIFE...and AREA 51...

My favourite songs :

TRANSPARENT MIND ( !!! ) - To me one of the best goa trance songs of all time...PERFECTION !

WAITING FOR A NEW LIFE - Also one of the best songs ever, surely among the most melodic ones.

THE CRUCIBLE - Captures the pure essence of goa trance as well...

AREA 51 - Freaky, alien psychedelic classic, very demented...:)

THE FURNACE - It has one of the best climaxes ever produced but as you said, not such good ending.

ALIENS - But of course it can't pass without this classic as well, very funny track.

BLADE RUNNER - Very effective psychedelic trance track...juicy....

51 PEGASUS - Their best ambient track, simple perfection...

NAUTILUS - Their second best ambient track, so melodic and cheerful...

NAKANO GHOST - Another very beautiful ambient track, they surely know how to create an atmosphere...

Blade Runner, as mentioned by Seraph, is awesome... I really like that track. And I seem to be the only one that enjoys Sound Is Solid more than Aliens =) But I only like the original version, not the one on the 12" that Simon Posford remixed, the original is more chaotic which is what I love about it.

But yeah, they're pretty hit & miss... they played here recently, with Antidote too so Serge was there as well (which is quite unusual seeing as they split up looong ago), but I actually didn't go... would have been cool to see them, but the venue has bad acoustics and I was very tired so I stayed home instead. Besides, their releases this side of the millennium have failed to grab me.

The backside from the Toxic Caterpillar is just fikking great (or is it the Toxic Caterpillar track, just have a promo and always mix the tracks up)!!!! I also love the Aliens/Sound Is Solid tracks.

The Delta Aquarids album is also nice but not as good as those three tracks.

They also did a remix of an Anne Clark track if I remember right... anyone knows the track and where I can find it?

The track is "Our Darkness" - the original from 1984 (!!!) sounds like goa trance, which is fucking amazing considering its age. Sure it has vocals and a saxophone, but compare it to the early dragonfly stuff and you'll see a distinct link. This is where goa trance began, and apparantly home-made edits of her tracks were big in goa in the mid 80's.

The remix is released on these records (I have the first in the list):

http://www.discogs.com/release/83870 (original 12")

http://www.discogs.com/release/50618 (original CD5")

http://www.discogs.com/release/121916 (full remix album, vinyl)

http://www.discogs.com/release/43831 (full remix album, CD)

http://www.discogs.com/release/167438 (full remix album, CD, re-release)

http://www.discogs.com/release/356429 (some compilation)

http://www.discogs.com/release/83824 (some compilation)

Note that she has been remixed by Saafi Brothers and Juno Reactor as well. The Juno Reactor remix is on Pulse 8 I think.

To Ukiro and other people who might know:

I found there are two different "original" versions of "Our Darkness" by Anne Clark, one of which is just called "Our Darkness" and the other has the epitet "Alternate Mix" and is roughly one minute shorter. Is there any significant difference between these except the length?

I don't have it, but I think the alternate mix was more adapted for radio play, hence the shorter play length.

'Access Denied'

i didn't like it very much except for that interview with the alien which is 'killah'

i read a great review about the album. 'its mixture of drum and bass and psytrance ... people who like drum and bass won't like it and people who listen to psytrance won't like it...'
