Darkpsy, hi-tech, full-on, techno, techtrance, techtrance. Techtrance it is. The Russian Manifold Studio and Ektoplazm team up to give us a compilation of spicy zesty music. The comp starts fast ranging from 138 all the way up to 142 (WOAH!). I don’t listen to a lot of techtrance so i can’t say if it’s unique or not but it certainly has a strong psychedelic edge, very smooth transitions and really cool progression. Each song takes you somewhere different but vaguely familiar (Think energy charged dreamscapes) . Tracks 5 - 10 slow it right down but still reach the extra techy biosphere. Faxi Nadu is a nice surprise, teaming up with Algae Bloom to drop it down to 130 bpm. Most tracks are pretty dark and made for long drives down computer generated, electroluminescent polygonic roads. Like Tron, or that highway in the Netherlands. Take your pick. Depending on what you like i’m sure a song or two will stand out here, for me it was the faster 1st half of the comp. If this is what a Russian takeover sounds like, i’m not objecting yet. Probably makes his hearing aid whistle and it was made by Russians. This is what they came up with after a 7 year absence? Eight tracks and only one of them (Hated I think) hasn't appeared on other compilations? But Mike, they were reworked and remastered!" Who the f*ck asked for that? Was there a crowdfunding page where the masses wanted to hear remastered mediocre tracks? This was the same guy who was responsible for the tech-trance monster Acid Box? Lots of questions and not many answers. This was an utter sh*tshow. House vocals, cheesy samples, and eye rolling phrases. It's full-on and not even well done full-on. You're kidding right? Am I getting punked? Ashton, come out man, this isn't funny anymore. Just a few quick notes: Voinamorov has that Nexus Media vibe to it, but that makes sense because it was released on the Midnight Storm II compilation. Even though I thought it was a good track that was 11 years ago, you don't get credit for that sh*t! Reworked and remastered? Sounds almost identical. Faces had almost every atrocious cliche that you can imagine. It's what makes people think psytrance is dead. That should've been buried when it appeared on the Edge compilation. And the "rocking" guitar of the final track was so 10 years ago. Look it's a free release and they are entitled to do whatever they want. Some smooth electronic music. One Arc Degree (Vasilis Kesalidis & Ioannis Konstantios) and Cybernetika (Lars Goossens) combine forces for pretty decent ep. The science fiction style is well represented as drum n bass percussion pings off the hull of our observatory craft with Nether Moon. It also has a nice break and cool piano riffs. The kick thunders in Ghost Comet as gentle and warming tones twinkle above and then Lars gets his hands on it and makes it more dark and mysterious. Cybernetika (Lars Goosens) and Xenofish (Christian Becker) have pooled their considerable talents in a Reese's Peanut Butter cup team-up that should have people salivating. Dark and cold foreshadowing a futuristic dystopia the music is Blade Runner on steroids. It begins lightly, but it doesn't last. With mind bending bpms they unleash a percussive onslaught that at times pushes me to my limits. 200 bpms? That's damn near face melting levels! Both of these guys have been quite prodigious when it comes to this type of music, but I can't help but feel that we didn't get the best they had to offer. The music (while superb in places) felt like b-side stuff without much cohesion. It's relentless pounding with a frenetic pace that gets really heavy. Think...thrash metal drum n bass. Even when the tracks weren't punishing (Chrono Wave) it wasn't that interesting. The best bits for me were the short dark-ambient interludes as they contained the most emotion. Tracks like Decaying Timelines. So while I appreciate both artists, I came away from this disappointed feeling an opportunity was missed. Now...a dark ambient album from these two...that's something I would certainly pay for. Free at Ektoplazm

You guys would be surprised how narrow "knowledge" in general I have over the scene in this terms, although I have been listening to Goa for eternity now. Maybe the internet was to blame (or precisely - the lack of the same), financial situation that was not keen on anyone loving the music and wanted to actually buy something back in my teenager days in my hometown (it was damn after war period so things were a bit complicated in this terms), or just the fact that I was on the margins of the civilization here in Croatia, small village with all its limitations to acces basically anything related to music except minor electronica radioshows that ofcourse didn´t play Goa/Psy back then. In the meantime i got older and lazy as fuk to remember anything but music itself (which started to change lately, fortunately). So now that I have my excuses, off to review: I love more than several tracks from this album. And I wanted to give him nice feedback on album in promo post and ended writing a review. - Album takes off with "Re-Restart" which is darker track in the beginning, but it reveals its melodic atmosphere towards the end - which got me going through the second part of the track nicely, well done! You can hear 90´s influence allover this track, and this is what boggles my mind in a very positive way, yet the track contains modern elements that keeps it present. I find it somewhat as mixture of softer melodic "Jaia" like GoaTrance and Oldschool trance from 90´s. - Second track "DNA" goes with more classical simple GoaTrance approach, but that entrancing repeat of that melody in the begining gets me in a trippy state of mind that prepares me for the tide that is to come next. Track is very well balanced in terms of arrangement and I dig this one the most, after "Am I The Universe" track. Lots of higlight moments in this one, small portions of variation that change in subtle way and layers that work rhytmicly so well that it lifts me from my chair and force me to dance! Proggy trippy GoaTrance i would say! - "Electronic LSD (Xamanist Remix)" is more on fullon side of things, so is the original - but so far i hear more GoaTrance in this album/ track than Fullon - it´s more like it is FullOff while Goa-ish flow takes control of the things happening through tracks. This track is once again nicely blended so you can´t certainly distinguish the two (something that Ofoira did in last album "Read More" which attracted me to this one also). Nicely measured mellos, effects which give you that classic Goa feel while kick and bass drive you in FullOn fashion way. In fact very good RMX of very good original that I also listened for the first time this morning. - "Darkness Be Light" is point where I thought it will be weakest spot of this album. That intro melody was bit irritating for me (totally subjective here), and this is where it goes more towards FullOn but once again it keeps old fashion melody drive present but not in a way that kept me interested into track. 2:58 is where it gets my attention back on track, another well measured mello drive that holds you tight with background atmospheres swiping through and through. Towards the end it gets slightly more energy even though melodies go in second plan here, accent is more on overall feel of atmospheric drive but again it works well for me. This one is first where I notice more progressive elements, mostly arrangement wise - something I always dig a lot, good example is Lectro Spektral Daze. - Track 5, "Bubbles" pretty much the same like previous one got me impatient to almost skip first part of the song, but things start to pickup pretty quick. Around 2:17 it gets needed drive that corrects the initial dissapointment I felt with this track. Artist got to have me going up and down in waves on this part of album, which I usually find good, but here I say this one is definitely weakest point of album for me. This track gets some more mystical melodies later, but I have feeling it is dragging from beginning towards the end. It gains more energy on second part, but it lasted eternity to get there. While it is not a bad track, it is not my style so I won´t yell too much It definately has some interesting moments happening closer to the end (again that progressive arrangement). - "Plant World" picks my senses once again. Nice start, takes off with proper kick/bass drive and tribal percs. Melodic part starts simple and then goes into upwards swirl around 1:49. From there things tend to go faster then in previous two tracks and keeps your brain expecting what comes next. Short break and then things dissolve a bit, in a good way - it gives you mindbreak to enjoy small fragments of fx sounds combined with subtly chopped mellos before it brings you up in a trippy kind of acid line combined with airy leads. I find this interesting from my point of view as I usually do not listen to this style but more it evolved, this track reminded me of drive that Lectro Spektral Daze achieved for me on "Psytrance Powers My Space Engines", i felt hype while listening to it! Good work on this one. - Last but not the least "Am I The Universe" is nicely picked closer. It tricks you like it´s gonna be classic slow closure of an psytrance album with beautiful like, chill/downtempo start of a track - and then it bangs you with kick/bassline and waving atmospheres until that simple acid line kicks around 1:39 - early enough to keep you craving for more. This one I feel like full progressive and I like it a lot. My kind of trance. I produced similar stuff back in the beginning of 2000s when I started with my first work in Reason (much more simpler tracks ofc.) but - same melody patternwork, and this is pure nostalgy and love for me! I love this track over all other on this album just because of this. Middle is a bit draggy, but more to the end it backs up with atmospheres and organic mellos + that contaguous simple yet powerful acid which will keep you in the track till the end. Overall I would give this one 7/10 on second listen. I still have to listen it properly on my monitor system to hear the sound (I gave it 2 listens here @ my workplace on pretty crap but honest speakers ), and then I will update my "verdict" on this one. What is sure is that we will play at least one of this tracks @ next weekend gig here in ZG to test it on the floor! Summary: Very good album that in whole worked for me except "Bubbles" track which is not my cup of tea.

The group formed during the recording sessions for Sörkkä Sonic, a collaborative album released in 1996 and attributed to Flippin’ Bixies, the original Finnish Goa trance super-group. Included on that album was Praktika’s earliest song, “Out Of Phase”. Playing The Presets was recorded during the Mutameri Sessions at the legendary Ääniasema Studios (also the home of Gad, M1D1L11TT0, O*men, and Squaremeat) between 1997–1999. This album was scheduled for release in autumn of 1999 on Exogenic Records but all master tapes were lost only to be rediscovered in the vaults of Johtoääni Studios in the summer of 2016. Nobody really knew what have happened and some blame aliens! All music is from pre-VSTi era when instruments were still made of red and silver plastic. Musically it goes from Goa trance to psy dub to psychedelic world music and Finnish forest funk. I found out about this from the forum which told me that this was our very own Oopie! So anytime one of our own has the courage to put their art out there (hell he may as well have used the bat-signal with that post) I'm only too happy to hear it. This thing saunters. It oozes toxic liquid. Groovy as hell, but don't turn your back on it cause it might f*cking stab you and run away laughing. The layers are deep and hypnotic creating a dark dream that's very psychedelic. The melodies go in directions that at first take seem dischordant and not very pleasing to the ear...almost chaotic. Like he's putting two things together that don't belong together. It's not often one finds true love...your money's on the dresser, chocolate. C'mon...we were all thinking it I just said it. There are only six tracks so they are of the longer variety and I know that I lost my way a few times. It has this progressive tempo, but is psychedelic in nature. The sound is great having been mastered by veteran masterer Deimos. Clearly this is something different and it pushes boundaries for those more accustomed to having their trance in a tidy little package. It might be a lot to take in on straight through listening, but there are some very good moments here. Free at Ektoplazm

Artist: Flowertz Title: Avocado EP Label: Ektoplazm Date: March, 2014 1. Avocado 2. FreeForm 3. Psychedelic Dance I don't like avocados. They have a very rich green color and look like they should taste sweet like a fruit. But they don't. F*ck you Subway it's not a super food. It's a super villain food. I even came up with a cool super villain name. The Chameleon. This three track EP is from Italian Gianpiero Fiorelli (like I needed to tell you he was Italian) and it's got some strong bas and head nodding goodness. There are plenty of sounds to enjoy, but it's a little light on evolution. The last track Psychedelic Dance is more of a mid-tempo piece, but it also suffers from the same pitfall. Pretty good EP, but nothing extraordinary. The mastering was done by Colin Oood giving it a rich, warm quality. Still don't like avocados though. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk

This is a dark and symphonic journey through the farthest reaches of the galaxy. There is a palpable sense of foreboding as if we normal humans have bitten off more than we can chew. These mutants...friend or foe. I used to think that drum and bass was a very limited medium where there were only so many places you could go. After an interminably long absence Cybernetika proves me wrong. Again. Is it possible to miss someone you've never met? His compositions are so lush and multi-layered that they beg to be explored. Melodies don't float they scream over the oftentimes cacophonous background. Someone mentioned that the rapid percussion is a distraction from the treasure that lay underneath. Maybe. Until you listen to the complexity of that percussion and realize it's all part of a rich tapestry. This blazes a trail across the cosmos combining sci-fi atmosphere with the heavy hitting industrial sound. How can something so punishing be so beautiful? And just when the speed becomes too much and almost rends the sinewy flesh from your physical form he delivers emotionally charged and melancholic breaks that lead you where he wants you to go. Growly distortion and futuristic android cybernetics permeate the landscape. It's unrelenting hyperspace travel that show how far advanced these mutants are over the human race. As it's released by Ektoplazm, it is also free, which is nice. It is downtempo/psychill. So, now lets get to the reveiwing: Track 1: Liquid Wonderment This was a wonderful start to the complation. It is my new favorite mellow song. I love the chimes(the main lead for half of the song). It has a glitch spin on it, and the drums have kind of a grove on it. The second half of the song, there is more of you typical baseline synth lead, and it still sounds good. Not your typical psytrance song though, there is no rolling baseline, ect. Track 2: Mycolinguistic (Sigil Remix) A nice song to, for some reason it reminds me of Infected Mushrooms Drop Out off of their Converthing Vegetarians Album. It says 154BPM, but it doesn't feel like it's that fast AT ALL. Also a very good song. Track 3: Coming Up In The Elevator Don't really like this song, I feel it sounds cheesy. Track 4: Crystalline Refinement A half good song, repeats it self a lot, and I don't really like the baseline. Track 5: Apparition Has a Shpongle feel. Very nice song, but hard to describe. Track 6: Trio Break Space Zone See Track 4. Track 7: Hipstrap Same as 6 Track 8: Tilt Also a Shpongly feel,nice and groovy. Track 9: Inner Flame Kind of Space Music. Could go both ways on this one, if I like it or not. Track 10: Exobiology The begining of the song is slow, but after 1:30 through, things pick up. I feel like the baseline ruins it, and doesn't really add anything. Track 11: External Encounters Very atmospheric track, me like. Could fall asleep to it. The guitar also gives it a Shpongly feel. Track 12: Nootropic Stack More ambeint then psychill. Still, is a well done track. Track 13: Konduit Starts very glitchy... This song is nice, and has a good beat. Track 14: Serpantine This is a nice finishing track. Feels more like Aphex Twin though, more ambient house. The vocals are a little weird though. Well, I liked this complation. This is the 2nd compilation released by the Ektoplazm label, the first being Organic Circuitry back in 2008. You've got your Ekto regulars as well as a few newcomers. Couple things... One, Ektoplazm does a great service for the psychedelic community in releasing tons of free, legal, quality music. I think we can all agree that the scene would surely suffer without his efforts. Second, this is a pretty interesting compilation. There are a multitude of styles which should appeal to many listeners. And I think that's it's strength and weakness. While the tracks were entertaining none of them were outstanding or particularly memorable. Personally I found the first four tracks rather unremarkable and it kind of put me off listening to this compilation. It was mentioned that the album would start with "humble beginnings", but just couldn't get into it, you know? The sound quality however is excellent as usual. Amygdala and Phobium were my favorites. Schlang is one vowel away from being known as the private parts of a man. And to title your EP Little Information Deposits suggest that you and your tiny junk have a leaking problem. Maybe Schlang is German for Itchy Weiner. Meh, maybe it's only my juvenile mind. I say itchy cause this sh*t is glitchy with heavily manipulated samples. There are elements of techno, electro, and dub all over break beats. Some of it is well done, but there are a LOT of samples. Too many I would say and the long tracks can make the listener weary. Frequent changes can be good, but there wasn't any phrase or part in any of the tracks which I could grab on to. And if you don't grab me right away then I'll be happy to introduce you to one of my closest friends. "Hi there, have you had the pleasure of meeting my dear friend the delete button?" Bouncy breakbeats and plenty of bass sounds with melodies that give it a sense of grandeur. There are glitchy tendencies of course, but it's not just noise. Computer sounds are melded creatively with melody and the whole thing is rather juicy. Sometimes I think it can lose it's way, but definitely worth a listen. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk
