  1. Artist: Shift Title: Phoenix Label: Spectral Records Date: November, 2015 1. Surface Detail 2. Fkn Awsm 3. Doorway to Infinity 4. Phoenix 5. 2 Doesn?t Ants 6. Inversion 7. Go Low 8. Null & Void "Today's drugs truly work miracles for young and old alike." Get some from that guy. Looks like he's got plenty. Now I would never advocate someone taking drugs, but perhaps he could maybe start with some Red Bull. The first two tracks sound like a very sanitized version of the music he used to make. Gone is the barely restrained chaos and thundering kicks and in its place is this commercial sounding music. This doesn't sound like Shift...This sounds like he lost a bet. Or he's trying to put his music in a box and it just doesn't fit. Thankfully it's not all like that. The title track is a bit of a smasher as is the Ants one. Get Low has some of that Nexus Media magic he used to display so effortlessly. A mixed bag really, but since it's a digital release on Beatport you can choose the good ones. Welcome back Mr. Hoy! 2. Artist: Various Title: Feel the Force Label: Spectral Records Date: June, 2005 1. Twisted System - Die Nagmerrie (Menog Remix) 2. Khopat - Alien Explorer 3. Shift - Serius Problem 4. Phyx Vs. Menog - Danian 5. Menog - Spiritual 00 (Audialize Remix) 6. Tryambaka - Filth 7. XRC - Medusa 8. Spectra - Borealis 9. Probe - Probe Feel the force. Hmmm....ok, a simple equation ought to sum things up nicely. = X Massively small tiny hands multiplied by a super slow acceleration will guarantee the survival of drosophila melanogaster. Probably the first time that classification was used in a review. While the label begun by Menog & XRC has had it's great moments this one is mostly a miss. The three tracks worth your while will be the bombastic and aggressive offerings from Shift, Phyx & Menog, and of course Twisted System. Pure acid mayhem. Things truly go off the rails by the time you get to Spectra and ends in a dumpster fire of a track by a project called Probe. Same last name as Menog so I'm sensing some nepotism is afoot. As I said mostly a miss aside from those three bangers. Psyshop
  3. Artist: Menog Title: Musically Speaking Label: Spectral Records Date: November, 2008 1. Musically Speaking 2. Matacanha 3. Basic Survival Instinct (feat Absolum) 4. Frequency Notes 5. Banzai 6. We Are Dust 7. Gravitation Field (feat. Space Tribe) 8. Spirits Rmx 9. We Ask Better Questions (feat. Probe) "If you change your focus you can feel good...instantly." "First you get the Quaaludes, then the women get all sleepy sleepy...then it's all HEY, HEY, HEY!" This whole situation confounds me. Like a lot of you I grew up with Bill Cosby first on Fat Albert then as America's dad on the Cosby show. He's spent a lifetime in the spotlight and has done so much good, but apparently done an equal if not greater amount of really terrible things. The confusing part is...you're f*cking Bill Cosby. Rich, successful, famous...you could have any woman you wanted why the need to drug and rape thereby destroying people's lives? Which once again reinforces the fact that rape isn't about sex it's about power and this is one sick f*ckstick. Ok, rant over. If acid is the dirty, sticky icky then this is cleaning windows with a mud pie. Filthy. Acid washes are all over this and if that's your thing then you should enjoy Daniel's work and find several tracks of worth here. It's powerful and will get the blood moving. with Basic Survival Instinct (with Absolum) at the top of the list. While the boom factor is surely there one could argue that an entire album of very similar tracks will get old quickly. For me he is beginning to stray perilously close to that line that a lot of artists seem willing to cross where there is less insanity in the night time music and more of a commercial, watered down feel. Let's hope that's not the case. Psyshop
  4. Artist: Rubix Qube Title: Dark Continent Label: Spectral Records Date: May, 2012 1. Dark Continent 2. Sneaky Snake Eyes 3. Important Announcement 4. Brain Wave 5. Not Physically Possible 6. Demon Speeding 7. No Time 8. 7 Deadlies "This is not physically possible." Yet here we are. Rubix Qube is Kieron Grieve and I don't think he gets the accolades he deserves. Another South African churning out quality South African psytrance that simply flies under the radar. His album Ulterior Motives and the EP Saturate are prime examples of quality night time goodness. With this album there is a techno influence that he blends seamlessly with the power he's known for. It's chunky and metallic at times, but he can also buttsmack you with eminently danceable grooves. The tracks are frequently evolving, but with none of that repeated start and stop nonsense. Thank you. No really...thank you. When he thinks it's time for some hip gyrations he stays with the rhythm. Samples are well placed, but not overdone and the guitar he uses is not of the cheesy variety. It's got some bite. Also his bass lines are the type you can feel in your chest. Sneaky Snake Eyes is bad ass psychedelia, Not Physically Possible is acidic funkiness (dirty morning dry mouth made out with middle aged smoker chick funky), and any time you can essentially remix a Rob Zombie track...well that's a gold escalator to Heaven with zero waiting as far as I'm concerned. Haven't heard a heavy remix this good since sHiFt demolished Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson. And to end with 7 Deadlies? A track that magnificently changes shape like so much smoke is f*cking fantastic. I think I got carpel tunnel from hitting the repeat button on that one. Beatport Mdk
  5. Artist: Menog & Iliuchina Title: Dirty Passion EP Label: Spectral Records Date: May, 2013 1. Menog - Boom Festival 2. Menog & Iliuchina - Illusion of Reality 3. Iliuchina - You Drive Me Crazy 4. Menog & Iliuchina - Black Hole Not you Daniel. Get outta the way. *pimp walks up to Iliuchina* "Hello baby how you doin?" *licks finger and touches shirt and then proceeds to touch Iliuchina's shirt* "How bout you and me get outta these wet clothes and do...what we really wanna do?" *spits out tooth and wipes blood of lip* "What'd I say? Menog (Daniel Bernardo) and Iliuchina (Veronica Iliuhin Loren) team up for a powerhouse of an ep. Daniel has been holding it down since forever, but Veronica is relatively new to the scene. Underestimate her at your peril. Boom Festival certainly brings the boom along with acid wipes and futuristic laser barrages. The opening LSD sample creates the atmosphere as if I were waking up groggy from the operating table. Illusion of Reality is another eerie entry in this twilight spectacle. Maybe a little too heavy on the sample, but the significant bump of the kick and bass line will make that seem like a minor complaint at best. You Drive Me Crazy sees Veronica on her own with a high energy track (and that's different from the others how?) that once again isn't short on thump. There is no story here. It's just get the f*ck out of the way. Black Hole is blistering mayhem that isn't afraid to go into a break and wind you up again. Daniel once again shows the young bucks how to devastate a dancefloor. Iliuchina shows that she is someone to be reckoned with and capable of carrying the twilight torch. If Daniel ever decides to let go of the f*cking thing that is. Get your intensity on. Beatport Mdk
  6. Artist: Various Title: Menog - I See Change Remixes Label: Spectral Records Date: November, 2013 1. Audialize Remix 2. Iliuchina Remix 3. Kin Remix 4. Tryambaka Remix 5. Biorhythm Remix 6. sHiFt Remix 7. Bretheren 8. Ectima Remix 9. Chilled Cquence Remix "I know change. I embody change. All we do...is change." Oh you're gonna get sick of hearing that. The first couple of times I listened to this I wanted to put Daniel in a dark Portuguese prison with a dead chicken around his neck. I know what you're thinking. What an odd thing to say. I only bring it up because this actually happened to a kid in a foster home in North Carolina. Seems kinda mean and f*cked up so I figured it would be a good form of punishment for Daniel. I mean some sort of retribution needed to be enacted for someone who would willingly put his listeners through the torture of 9 remixes of one track. One. Imagine being stuck in the movie Groundhog day, but instead of getting to cold cock Ned Ryerson you get to beat your head against the wall for 24 hours. Because even with the changes each artist made to the original it's still the same f*cking track. Same one. By the time Tryambaka's version rolled around I was seeing double and began to sharpen my knife. But then I got to thinking. This is probably not meant for home listening and most assuredly not meant to listen to all the way through. Maybe it's just for DJ's looking to drop some acid and thumping beats into their twilight set. Because let me tell you even though there are 8 clones they all have that in common. Eviscerating acid scalpels that are relentless guaranteed to rock the dance floors. The 9th and final mix is a laid back yet eerie dub track that thankfully let me catch my breath. So I would say there is a time and a place for everything. With my kids playing upstairs I was free to let this blare through the subwoofer and I loved it. Listening all the way through with the headphones doesn't do it justice. Some searing tracks in here for you night time psytrance people. Beatport Mdk
  7. Artist: Menog Title: I See Change EP Label: Spectral Records Date: April, 2012 1. I See Change 2. Revolution of Consciousness feat. Absolum 3. Make The Change "Fire...our first true piece of technology. Fire." And it all leads up to this moment brought to you by disappointed redneck parents everywhere. Lot of talk about change lately. Change the tax code, change your lifestyle and eating habits (RIP Twinkie). It's even hit close to home. Had to get rid of my previous research assistant due to ahem, certain litigation so breaking in the new meat has been a very exhaustive process. "I said three sugars! Three!! We are going to be here all night till you get it right! You think I like this?" Tough job, but someone has to do it. Our friend Daniel Bernardo from Portugal is back with a 3 track EP and I for one am eager to hear it. This fool has been holding it down since 2005 (yeah I know his debut was in 2003, but it was terrible) and is one of the godfathers of the twilight music genre. He brings more of what he's good at, moody and dark hi-tech psy that is sure to get the dance floor moving. The title track isn't bad, but it's merely an introduction to what's to come. Looky looky who he's teamed up with for track 2. My favorite twilight artist Absolum (still waiting for next album) and you can't miss his sound with this one. These guys ain't strangers if you recall 2008's Basic Survival Instinct as that one left a mark not unlike a blowtorch. It delivers power and mayhem that erupts like a 3 hour hand job. Make the Change is the second best track on the EP IMO with a good sample about technology and ambition. It's not bad at all, but let's face it Absolum could probably make my music sound good and all I know how to do is beat box. Good stuff. Beatport Mdk
