  1. Artist: Various Title: Fractal Energy Label: Fractal Records Date: February, 2007 1. Electric Universe - Shift 2. Neuromotor Vs. Electrocult - Humamacumadi 3. Outer Signal - Alien Signal 4. Painkiller Vs. Puzzle - Invalid Extension 5. Sidhartha - The Sleepwalker 6. Madnetic - Jungle Groove 7. Kali - Travelizer 8. Chromatone Vs. Random - Lighter Than Light 9. Elec3 - Purple Shrimp 10. Hexagnum - The Poem What is it with these compilations that just mail it in as the you go deeper down the tracklist? Seems it was a common practice with a lot of labels, but let's be honest there's a lot wrong with this compilation. Right from the outset we get a track from legend Boris Blenn that sounds identical to almost every track he's been making for a decade. Taking a sabbatical might not be the worst thing for him at this point. Moving on I defy you to make it through Humanacumadi without wanting to trip a toddler. It's ruthless in its annoyance. Next we are subjected to "full-on with an edge" clones that don't succeed in either category. This includes Invalid Extension with it's insipid sample, touch tones, and bass line made me want to dig up Alexander Graham Bell and punch his corpse. How in the f*ck does that get past quality control? Somehow I have two physical copies and it's the equivalent of leaving a bag of poo on my doorstep whilst you ring the bell and hide behind a bush. Often I wonder why I continue to review so many deeply flawed albums when there's porn to be watched and sh*ts to be taken, but I always come back to the same answer. I do it for you. 2. Artist: Various Title: Fractal Resonance Label: Fractal Records Date: June, 2014 1. Braindriver & Disco Volante - Disco Driver 2. Deliriant feat. Z3ro - Back Again 3. Shuumat & Orca - That's Freedom 4. Rubix Qube - Heizenberg 5. Iliuchina - My Dangerous Drug 6. X-Side - Cyborg Feelings 7. Earworm & Audialize - Mirage of Life 8. Tickets & Sound Control - Epic Universe So let's see...we've had 4 Fractal Energies, a Fractal Effect, a Fractal Syndrome, and now here we are with a Resonance. I assume that Fractal Uterus will be out in the near future? C'mon Fractal Records, you're like Puffy trying to be in all the videos. This is a digital compilation that has nine night time tracks that you can get from Beatport if you like your psytrance without the commercial cheese that's going around like the clap. I can recommend this. Mostly. The first track is rather linear and doesn't go anywhere. I really think Mr. Volante has thrown his hands up in a grand f*ck it gesture cause he sure doesn't seem to be trying any longer. I was all set to give the fine folks at Fractal Records the old eye roll at the beginning of Back Again, but there were some very cool breaks in there. The acid insanity also made it quite the belter. That's Freedom and its overtired brand of full-on shackled me with ambivalence, but leave it to the Qube to break those chains. And break them he did as he got all nine inch nailsy with the screaming synth. He builds the tension up and then takes it away a couple of times. Iliuchina's track is fine, but now we're getting to the mental stuff. Cyborg Feelings is a dark, brooding monster that's nice and liberal with the acid. The last two keep it dark and acidic with thumping bass lines. While not perfect this digital release is a solid purchase for those on the hunt for the darker, melodic side of night time music. Can't stop. Won't stop. Beatport
  3. Artist: Z3ro Title: Interception EP Label: Fractal Records Date: February, 2014 1. Space Empire 2. The Resistance feat. Locked Locker 3. The War of the World 4. Mind Master feat. Z3ro "Join me, rise up with me, rise up on the wings of this slain angel. We’ll rebuild on the soul of this little warrior. We will pick up his standard and raise it high! Carry it forward until this city, your city, our city, his city, is a palace again! Is a palace again!" Holy sh*t is there a better orator than Al Pacino. This man could fire me up to punch a RPG toting terrorist in the dick. I didn't see the movie, but listening to the clip of his speech I was ready to take on the world. And this would be the perfect soundtrack to do just that. I knew I liked this guy. This is Javier Cortes from Mexico and half of the bombastic Speedball project. Knowing that will give you a better understanding of what you'll find in here. Heavy, thumping beats and acidic mayhem. I'm talking hurricane force stuff. And let's not forget that it's also loaded with ass wiggling material. These are quality tunes made for opening up that V8 on the interstate. I tell ya Fractal Records has been kicking some ass lately. When the hell did they become 3D Vision? *Javier not responsible for any speeding tickets or the revocation of anyone's license. Please drive responsibly.* Beatport Mdk
  4. Artist: Brainwash Title: Brainwash & Friends Label: Fractal Records Date: October, 2012 1. Acidbrain - Feelings 2. Brainwash feat. Magneto - I Have a Voice 3. Brainwash feat Zinx - Brainscan 4. Brainwash feat Sinful Reactions - Destroy It 5. Brainwash feat. Khopat - Version 3 6. Brainwash feat Alienn - Second Level of Storm 7. Brainwash feat Brain Hunters - Massive Army 8. Brainwash feat Freeze - Alive "What's so funny, c'mon lemme look at it." Nothing good ever came after this sentence was spoken. Case in point whatever this headache is. Buildups, buildups, and more buildups. Oh the buildups. But wait...there's more! Stops and starts and so many repeated phrases. I know we loop sh*t in this genre, but give me f*cking break. This is sonic regurgitation with samples galore. It plays at twilight music, but this trojan horse is fooling no one. It's commercial full-on tripping all over itself to reveal its inane nature. Have you no shame? There are some good acid deluges, but they're shoehorned in between all the other terrible bullsh*t. The cast of characters is impressive as they have each made much, much better music than this. It's just full steam ahead without any attention to detail. Wonder what they have in common. If I could just put my finger on it... And I don't know what the f*ck Fractal Records was thinking. Oh well, one step forward, two steps back. Don't get Brainwashed. I'm not linking to this. Support your own bad habits. Mdk
  5. Artist: Various Title: The Fractal Effect Label: Fractal Records Date: February, 2014 1. Braindriver - Black Candy 2. Geko Vs. Technodrome - Mathematical Models 3. Tryon - The Answer Is The Power 4. Iliuchina - Play Time 5. Alienn Vs. Zinx Vs. Wired - It's About Time 6. Karmacrop - Interplanetary Origins 7. Shuumat - Harmonic Therapy 8. Frozen Ghost Vs. Selective Hearing - Operation Thunderbolt 9. Orca - Never In A Million Years Fractal Records you confuse me. At times you have released some awesome stuff. But then on the other side of the coin I want to push you in front of traffic. This release is an example of both. The playlist looks great with some of the top names in the twilight genre, but there is the unmistakeable stench of that shiny, triplet heavy, weak full-on. I wrote this awhile ago so let's see if I can clarify. Black Candy- "Seems almost a message coming from space!" Yeah and that message is nobody likes the black licorice. No offense, but when you want some sweet candy you're not looking for some Ouzo. It's the red headed stepchild of candy. It started off sweet with some power and the dark atmosphere, but then went the commercial route. Mathematical Models- Geko and Technodrome? This has the potential to go awry very quickly. And that triplet I was talking about? Yeah it's here. Felt like I was riding a motherf*cking horse. The Answer Is The Power- "A secret fraternity..." Only the very stupid can call this man brother. The best yet, but that's not saying much. I've heard far superior stuff from you Telmo. Face it...you mailed this in. Play Time- "Play time is over." Yes, clearly as play time is supposed to be fun. Generic twilight that has been watered down like some stinky herb is an inevitability I suppose. The lead that resembles a homogenized electric guitar wins no points with me. It's About Time- Alienn or as I like to call him twilight Jesus paris up with Zinx and Wired for the heavy hitter on this compilation. Lasers and acid go together like chocolate and anything and you'll get your fill here. Pretty intense. Interplanetary Origins- Khopat + Sidhartha = a pretty good team. You get futuristic sounds and I know they're out there samples over a punishing acid shower. And that's about it. Good enough for you? Harmonic Therapy- "What's your feeling when I say drugs?" Get back on them. This track needs a serious shot in the ass. Not terrible, but you're playing with the big boys now. Kinda. Operation Thunderbolt- "All things being equal this one's my favorite." It could've been. Acid, great sample placement, and that twitter that gets the backfield in motion makes this a treat. Those leads are intense so if you've got a headache or even the beginnings of one steer clear of this. Not his best work either with too many stops and starts, but it's one of the best ones here. Picture scratching your dad's records and instead of worrying over it you say f*ck you Dad wanna share these mushrooms I just got? Never In A Million Years- Did you happen to hear Orca's latest album Redefined? And this guy talks to empty chairs. It was one of the worst efforts I've ever heard and redefined how maybe I've been too hard on dogsh*t. Luckily this predates that and is actually isn't as much of a clusterf*ck as I thought it would be. I like the juxtaposition of the old corny song with the intensity of today. Kinda like what Jay-Z did with Hard Knock Life. The acid deluge at the end helps prop up some of the weaker sections of the track like the buildups and the...well you know. Remember back in the mid 2000's when labels like Timecode, Nexus Media, and Yabai were just wrecking sh*t with their music? Twilight music that was rough and powerful with dark atmosphere. Acid aplenty and not just for acid's sake. Tracks that would lead somewhere instead of just vomiting everything they've got right onto your plate? Well this isn't that. There are spots where it's good and I imagine it would get the job done on the dance floor. But it's marred by too much polish, too much commercial shinyness that seems more concerned with fitting into today's algorithm of what the twilight sound has become. So I guess I'll say not bad, but not great. Beatport
  6. Artist: Orca Title: Redefined Label: Fractal Records Date: November, 2013 1. Sweet Oblivion 2. Reduced To Dust 3. Other Mind 4. You Know 5. Magical Concoction 6. Sad Movies 2.0 7. Physical World 8. Humen Consciousness 9. Goash "Oh my God, the end is near!" The end of Orca maybe. Probably. Almost certainly actually. What the f*ck happened to you? This has to be the clearest case of alien abduction on record. It's the only explanation. The only thing redefined here is the direction of your music. From a guy who was once responsible for the psychedelic and hard hitting Fists of Fury you now make music that appeals to the lowest common denominator. Tired sounds, buildups, and unimaginative drivel. This is full-on that dumbs down psytrance. I'm still shaking my head...you couldn't intentionally make something this bad. Could you? Look I get it. While fiercely loyal the psychedelic crowd is a finicky bunch. Many a critically acclained artist will tell you as great as it is to have created something significant they would also really love to eat something more substantial than baloney sandwiches. The money is in the commercial music and it's probably nice to have money for gas. But I gotta tell you from a fan's perspective this is unlistenable. And Fractal Records...I expect way better from you. Sad albums make me cry. And this one is a Kleenex 4 boxer. One of the worst albums I've heard. Ever. Beatport Mdk
  7. Artist: Tryon Title: Magnetic Lines EP Label: Fractal Records Date: September, 2013 1. Natural Energy 2. Surprise Box (feat. Sinful Reactions) 3. Epic Waves 4. The Keeper (Tryon Remix) - Digital Talk This is an absolute bomb of an EP. If you love the twilight madness like I do then do not hesitate to pick this up. Worth every penny. Each track is a thunderous IED of acid shrapnel and concussive booming that will lay waste to subwoofers everywhere. Telmo is part of the next wave of nighttime marauders and he has taken it to that next level. This is full of dark and powerful sounds that keep the adrenaline flowing. So head to your nearest mosh pit but leave the valuables at home. Sh*t is likely to get broken. Beatport Mdk
  8. Artist: Speedball Title: Reloaded EP Label: Fractal Records Date: May, 2013 1. Kingston 2. Universo 3. Locked Ball 4. Hyperion "Welcome to the f*cking universe!" Hells yeah! Where's my sippie cup? And who took all the motherf*cing Goldfish? Not since the invention of the taco has there been a greater contribution from Mexico. There. I said it. Speedball are Javier Durán Cortes & Raul Gonzalez and their debut album Human Disorder showed that they were not messing around. There are certain tracks you hear that stick with you. They never get old and always cause you to get out of your seat and dance like a crazy person. For me it was Fully Awake by Electric Universe. But it was also Buenos Muchachos by these guys who took that Goodfellas laden track and annihilated anything I've heard recently. Speedball take twilight music to that other level where only a mentally unstable few dare to tread. It's acid laden and carries a big kick and rumbling basses. This is music that unleashes the wrath you may have pent up, and all you can do is look back and hope you have clean underwear. Futuristic hyper trance with an intense pace is the name of the game on 75% of this EP. I can only assume that Kingston was the product of a very fruitful journey to Jamaica. Make some new friends did ya? Irie man, irie. Sometimes our music disappoints and does the same old tired song and dance. With all the releases I suppose it's to be expected. These guys however helped to restore my faith in the good old psytrance beatdown. Suck it Oakenfold. Beatport Mdk
  9. Artist: Various Title: Pranava Mantra Label: Fractal Records Date: June, 2012 1. Speeding Bullet - Orca 2. Unhuman - Poizon Vs. A-Mush 3. Demon - Braindriver 4. Everything Moves - Resonanz3 5. Higher Dimension - Hyperactive I realize that I haven't been churning out the reviews recently like I used to. Life has gotten in the way. Take one kid to school, spend some quality daddy daughter time with my little girl, clean the house (losing this battle) prepare all meals, do the laundry including folding and putting it away (taking it on the chin here as well), mow the lawn, do the shopping...you get the idea. Oh yeah, also have to maintain this hunk of man meat so my wife will still give me the goods. How do I look? Needs more bronzer! So when I look in this forum I see it's deader than Mitt Romney's chances of being President. What the f*ck people? I'm not asking for a thesis, but how about some thoughts on how a particular release made you feel or whether it sucked or not? It's tough carrying this load and the forum would be a much more attractive place if you would stop lurking and start contributing. *Gets of soapbox. Frowns at it. Kicks it. Kicks it again. Jumps on it repeatedly and pisses on it. Takes out matches and sets it on fire. Watches it burn. Looks askew at chick observing in horror. Slaps chick. "What the f*ck are you looking at?" Chases chick. Forgot pants. Still chases her. Grabs heart. Slows down. Breathe. Breathe* See, look what you almost made me do. Fractal Records has always had a good track record with me. They've been responsible for some real quality twilight psytrance in the past so this struck me and I picked it up. It was worth it, but I'll show you how I got there. Speeding Bullet- Do you like subway? I do on occasion. Quizno's is way better, but Subway will do in a pinch. Orca's album Fist of Fury from way back in 2008 was impressive so I was looking forward to his hard edged style. It's comprised of 3 parts not unlike a Subway sandwich. The beginning and the end are the bread and what we have here is some Italian herbs and cheese nicely toasted. But the middle is the meat and let's face it, that's what makes a good sandwich. Imagine a recently fired sandwich artist wanted to get back at his boss. Just before he cleans out his locker he decides that your Philly Steak and cheese needs more defecation. The middle of this track was so f*cking bad it made me pine for a sh*t sandwich. I hate it when psy artists try to remake classical or video game music and in this case a movie theme. The outcome is never good and it always sounds embarrassingly bad. No exceptions. None. So why on God's green Earth did he decide to remake the Superman Theme? Christopher Reeve? Richard Pryor? Yeah that one. I've had a kidney stone and as excruciatingly painful as that was it paled in comparison to what I just heard. Did you even listen to this Fractal Records? You just threw your money away on a sh*t sandwich. Eat Fresh! Unhuman- See this one is just the opposite. The beginning is unimpressive, but they manage to cobble together some momentum in the middle. You've got some acid and power, but there are so many stops and starts it's like playing Red Light Green Light. Not. Going. To Stick. With Me. Not like Orca's track. But have you ever stepped in a pile of sh*t? Hard as f*ck to get that sh*t off. Demon- Not a minute in and already with the buildup? You just started, what exactly has been building? To his credit it picks up steam and gets very powerful. Easily the best so far, but look what you were up against. Everything Moves- Maximum points for using the Clerks sample. And for being a thick and chunky track. This is the quiet guy that waits for you to say something stupid before he hauls off and whacks you in the mouth. Oh yeah he's f*cking everything that moves as the acid flies. Hey! Hey Braindriver! You have officially been knocked off the pedestal. Higher Dimension- "The highest dimension is 11. You can not go higher than 11." "It's what I been trying to tell you for mor'n a decade adn't I?" Talk about ending on a high note. The power explodes from the get go along with a slick groove and massive acid splatter. Somebody needs to clean that sh*t up. But it ain't gonna be me. This one kept getting better and better as it went along. We have a new champion! So that's how I came to think this was worth it. Since it's digital, buy the last three tracks and you should be golden. Beatport Mdk
  10. Artist: Magneto Title: Scope Label: Fractal Records Date: September, 2011 1. Push the shock 2. Zombie Mode 3. Origins (Album Edit) 4. Scope 5. Unusual Signs 6. Dips of memory 7. Quick Road 8. Fractal Syndrom (vs A-Mush) 9. Madness Planet Toddlers are a fickle bunch. For months my son was into Yo Gabba Gabba. Watched it all the time, sometimes the same episode over and over. Then one day he looks at me and says,"Wanna watch a Team Umizoomi." What? Are you kidding me? What am I supposed to do with the 50 f*cking Gabba Gabba episodes on the DVR? I'll give you another one, and anyone with kids can relate to this. For a year the boy cultivated a love affair with bananas. Always wanted one, no matter the meal, throughout the day. Then all of a sudden he looked at me like I was crazy for offering it to him. Couldn't give one away if the monkey was still attatched to it. Point is, they like what they like when they like it. When I write reviews it's a long process, but rarely is it done in front of the computer. Sure I could do it in my Mission Impossible car, but it's in the shop. Nope, the lion's share of them are pretty much conceived when I'm doing my daily routine. Just like this one. It wasn't until I played it a few times for my son that this review came to me. Fractal Records has been on a bit of a roll lately. Arecibo Chronicles Vol. 1 and Fractal Energy Vol. 4 were both quality exercises in the twilight genre. This is Vlad Krivoshein from Russia who's kicking it in Israel lately. Working on the peace process I reckon. Well, in his spare time he creates some pretty good music. I will tell you why this will appeal to the two year old in all of us. And no, it's not an insult. It's real life. I don't know a two or three year old that likes to be stationary. I don't think they know how. This music put my kid into overdrive. It's high energy psytrance with a buttload of lasers and intensity. Definitely will get the blood pumping. He was jumping and shaking uncontrollably like a member of NAMBLA running a daycare. Yikes...that might be too far. How about after a coffee milkshake. Please don't take my kids away.... Reason number two this is a hit with the toddler set is this... I don't know a kid that doesn't like to get a little dirty. They can't help themselves. You could put them in a room with nothing but a floor and four walls and some how the little bastard would come out with chocolate all over his face. This release is heavy on the sticky icky. The acid flies about willy nilly like an afternoon at the laser tag arena. Only instead of lasers the guns are loaded with maple syrup. It's an Aunt Jemimah b*tch slap. "How did you...? You were in there for 5 minutes!?! Oh f*ck...that, that is...chocolate, right? Please tell me that's chocolate." Number three is repetition. It's how they learn so you can't be mad at them for asking the same f*cking question every 10 seconds. That's why God made them so cute when they do that so you don't want to strangle them. I'm waiting for all the "why" questions and then I will unleash every Dad's secret weapon. Go ask your mother. All the tracks follow the same pattern, you know high energy, lasers, acid...yadda yadda yadda. But the music is so good it's not a bad thing. I believe Mae West said it best when she said too much of a good thing is wonderful. Hmmm...I know what you're thinking. Maybe I should get my kid to do a few reviews. Probably do a better job. This was a good twilight release. If you like stuff like Alienn, Speedball, Concept, Tryon, or Nexus Media and Timecode Stuff then this will be right up your alley. Perfect for the two year old in all of us. "No, no, no! Atma is mine...you do the new Dynamic! We agreed!" http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/frc/frc1cd014.html http://www.beatspace.com/6631/Fractal+Records/MAGNETO/The+Scope/detail.aspx http://www.saikosounds.com/english/display_release.asp?id=8878 http://www.goastore.ch/product_info.php?products_id=4617 Mdk
