  3. Artist: Bioscape Title: Nature's Geometry EP Label: Gliese 581C Date: April, 2012 01 - Sunrise Prayer (70 BPM) 02 - Dub Forest (110 BPM) 03 - Synergistic Movement (70 BPM) 04 - Spectral Dub (80 BPM) This is Andrew Dyche from the ATL where the playas play. It is also his debut. According to the always accurate promo: "His music celebrates nature and encourages us to take an intimate look at our surroundings." He must be talking about his vacations from Atlanta. Ever been there? Nice city if you can get through all the mother f*cking traffic. If you go, avoid the summer. Feels like a Turkish bath house it's so damn humid. Most ATLiens will tell you that there surroundings are indoors in the summer. More known for it's southern rap style (Outkast, Ludacris) I'm curious to see what a downtempo producer will bring. Let me tell you it is some mellow stuff. The first track is an intro that is soft and gentle like the breaking dawn and the creatures in the forest are waking up. There is reverberating electric piano and a muted kick. Very good opener. Dub Forest seems significantly slower, but that ain't what the bpm's are saying. This dubby tune is quite full with bunches of layers that take their sweet time. It's good, but I would've liked some extended periods of contrast to keep it interesting. More than 8 minutes at this slow pace is like crawling a marathon. Synergistic Movement has that contrast with several changes and it is shorter so not to tax the mind. With the final track it's more of the same hypnotic dubby sunshine. And basically that is what this EP is...smooth, mellow, and very relaxing. I liked the whole thing and look forward to more from this artist. Ektoplazm Mdk
  4. Artist: Ekoplex Title: Discovering The Ancient Label: Omnitropic Date: January, 2012 01 - Turtle Island (120 BPM) 02 - Hip Shiva Wigga (100 BPM) 03 - Follow The Music (100 BPM) 04 - Shamanic Drumz (110 BPM) 05 - Before The Sun (110 BPM) 06 - Aya (110 BPM) 07 - Shapeshifter (112-119 BPM) 08 - Crossroads (114 BPM) 09 - End Of The Cycle, Beginning Of... (110 BPM) Where the f*ck did this come from? It's Ray Vincent from Canada with his third album but instead of full-on or morning trance he vaults into the downtempo arena. I never payed much attention to his releases because I've heard so much full-on that I am sick to death of it. But that changes now. Just read the comments on his album releases at Ekto. Absolutely glowing with people falling all over themselves to praise this project. So without experiencing any of his previous work I dove head first into this. Reasons why this is different...well, first off it's free. Second, it is a digital release with liner notes. Well, a link to liner notes. Nice touch as he gives you waaaaay more information than you are used to receiving in this genre of music. On every track. He talks about his tuning method, his trip to Nepal, and the samples as well as live instruments he used. So right off the bat that was greatly appreciated. Just reading how he feels about tracks and things in general makes me feel about as deep as a puddle compared to his ocean. The music itself is marvelously detailed and frothing over with depth. Let's just get it out into the open, it's not a true downtempo album, but psychill or deep trance with lengthy storytelling parts. Turtle Island has to be one of the most atmospheric and involving tracks I have heard in quite some time. Incredibly massive, I just kept hitting the repeat button. Most of the other tracks were in that same intricate style with real world instruments and mid tempo rhythms. Sometimes I felt like I was at a Phish concert where I didn't know where one track ended and another began. That's called good flow. The last track gallops along at over 20 minutes and is so full and varied that it has to be heard to be believed. Did I feel the transition to the sitar at the 13 minute mark could've been smoother as it felt like two different tracks? Sure, but minor quip aside it's still melodic and groovy as hell. Congratulations Mr. Vincent you have accumulated another fan. I cannot recommend this highly enough with its varied storytelling and beautiful musicianship. It's got a little bit of everything from progressive to tribal and of course downtempo with plenty of real instruments. All done with layer upon layer of melody. This is an example of the sum being greater than its parts. Take the time and go for a walk or a hike, but get outside and enjoy this. The fact that this is free leaves no excuses not to hear this. It's like a guy (me) that has only had a PC, but wandered into an Apple store and the ghost of Steve Jobs came up to me and said, "No, you know what? F*ck it, just take this iPad." "Can I get an iPad 2?" "I said iPad. Now beat it." You know, I normally reserve this happy full feeling for a great dinner out, but...you've earned it. Chicka chicka chick... Ektoplazm Mdk
  5. Artist: Maharishi Title: Sense of a Feather Label: Ouim.net & Space Baby Records Date: December, 2011 01 - Bhuvana (Intro) (105 BPM) 02 - Shadowland (feat. Extatic) (80 BPM) 03 - Liquid Trip (105 BPM) 04 - Satori (Punarjanma) (115 BPM) 05 - Maharani Deva (90 BPM) 06 - Angelic Tears (96 BPM) 07 - Call Of The Ancients (95 BPM) 08 - Satori II (Gourishankar) (110 BPM) 09 - Balance On The Edge (The Eagle Feather) (98 BPM) 10 - Satori III (Anapurna - Nirvana) (96 BPM) I don't think this is the guy. I mean it could be, but he seems more the type to be confused by the intricacies of a push button phone than mastering his pirated copy of Cubase. Remember the boy maharishi in Indiana Jones Temple of Doom? Don't think it was him either. Digging into this rusty filing cabinet that is my brain (give me a break, maid doesn't come till Tuesday...yeah you'll wanna not step in that) I can recall that littly guy was a mean SOB who came to a gruesome end. So...ghosts have trouble with software. Believe me I know, every spook from the Ghost Whisperer has been dropping demos on my desk. Do I look like Mars or Anoebis? No deal! Well, unless I can get a crack at 1990's JLH. Sure her football shaped pimento olive head couldn't seem to stay upright, but miracles were worked with that push up bra. Oooof! You know what? Scratch that. Any chick that has already purchased her own engagement ring is way more maintenence than I want to take on. Get with her and all of a sudden after sex it's 72 questions about what I'm thinking and why I can't understand her anger that I didn't remember our 2 and a half week anniversary. Newsflash honey, I was blinded by your sweater puppies and now if it's not too much to ask I'd like for you to turn into a pizza. Those five minutes of energy ain't gonna regenerate itself. What were we talking about? Oh, excuse me I do sometimes tend to ramble. This is Borislav Lazarov who was kind enough to give us this album for free. The tracks originate from 2005-2011, kinda like a compilation of his work. Bhuvana (Intro)- Birds, crickets, sloshing water...I feel like I'm in a psychiatrist's office and he's gonna ask me about my mother. Then the bass line rolls in and at first it doesn't seem to fit. After the beat kicks in with some soft melodies I'm thinking maybe this forest isn't all Disney, but maybe a little Sleepy Hollow. Not the gay one, the Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci "do you think me wicked" one. Shadowland- Webster knows the score! It's breakbeat goodness at a slow gangsta pace that lulls you right into your hypnotic cocoon. That ethnic guitar fits perfectly into the mix. Liquid Trip- Progressive leanings with a very long pad that pitches up and down. Nothing really happens and I think that's what drones you into a trip, but it's like when I would get high with my friends. Is everyone as f*cked up as me? This is how I'm supposed to feel...right? Why are you staring at me? "Dude, you are really f*cked up." Satori (Punarjanma)- Wailing sounds and skittering effects make it seem like you're walking down a dimly light corridor. It's got some percussion that's not too heavy, but full of motion. Very dreamlike with rapid fire guitar notes so I'm liking it, but I think it went on too long. 11 minutes. I coulda banged JLH twice in that amount of time. Maharani Deva- We are treated to more dark pads and a space vibe. Plodding along with peculiar percussion it's another track that lends itself to dreaming. Eerie for sure with the pianos playing against the liquid bass. Nice. Angelic Tears- See this is where he shines for me. A breakbeat with eerie melodies that wouldn't be out of place on a hip-hop album. It's dark and menacing and makes me want to do bad things to good people. Well, not me. But this guy... Call of the Ancients- That screechy lead took a filter bath at two and a half minutes and I...just...love it! You can't have a call to the ancients without a, you know...call. And there is one. I see a woman twirling (naked of course) in the center of the tribe like the film was sped up. Lightning quick synth riffs have me looking skyward and this is a race to the end. Not my favorite, but it definitely involves you. Satori II (Gourishankar)- Probably the most layered track here, it is full of dark melodies and futuristic effects. He uses that machine gun style again as the breakbeat bounces along. Very good track. Balance On the Edge (Eagle Feather)- Everything comes together on this one. Mid tempo rhythms and frantic synth races join a well placed sample to give it a spiritual feel. Also well layered thickening things up. Satori III (Anapurna - Nirvana)- With the final track at over 10 minutes, it could go either way. The beginning is a soft intro for about a minute or so, and then it gets hit with the funk stick for a dirty breakbeat. More layers and more melancholy, with piano slams like Depeche Mode. Super. The beat was so strong and the synths so involving I didn't even mind the long Indian sample. Very airy and floaty. I hope to hear more from this individual. He had some great breakbeats and synth work as his music leans towards the dark side. The fact that it's free is just icing on the cake. Ektoplazm Mdk
  6. Artist: Jens Buchert Title: Interstellar Label: Plusquam Records Date: November, 2011 1. Silkstream 2. The Vortex 3. Venus Nights 4. Helios 5. Spaceglider 6. Causality 7. Echospheres 8. Fluffy Time 9. Never Ending 10. Phoenix Sleeping 11. Swift 12. Interstellar 13. Sleepwalker 14. Parabolic 15. Amour Noblesse 16. Endless Dark I had to check this out just because the cover. I had never heard of Jens Buchert even though he has like...12 albums or something. The cover has a robot and I like robots. Hollywood has long waged a smear campaign against these mechanical creatures painting them as evil beings. And let's be honest...we're not quite at the technological level that movies would have us believe. We must act quickly before the Terminator gives us all diabetes and high blood pressure. like middle aged Japanese aren't already stereotyped for their wooden personalities. Which one's the robot? That is some creepy sh*t. I can see this guy bringing a chick home (no I can't) and in his mind thinking she would be enamored of his brilliance by dropping her fear soaked panties in submission. Sick f*ck. This is what all the nerds are worried about? So the defense against a highly sophisticated multi-million dollar defense project is to...run upstairs? Silkstream- Warm machinery hums as I stand on the observation deck and view a starship exiting the docking bay. It is the human race's last hope as the search for water takes a bold new step. Rich floating pads and futuristic effects make this a great piece of space ambient. The Vortex- That's a pretty big beat you've got there young man. I'ts what I would be pumping in my land speeder if I rolled through the cantina neighborhood. "This isn't the beat you're looking for." There is a spacey feel that is balanced with some nice flute. Wailing pads give it a melancholic feel. Superb! Venus Nights- I like the strings, but the breakbeat puts it over the top. Good stuff. Helios- Can't get over the warmth of these tracks. Is that Na'avi? Either that or Portuguese. With unraveling electronics and funky drummings this is a nice treat. It's chill and multi-layered. Spaceglider- "The reward of faith is to see what you believe. While there is life, there is hope. While we breathe, we shall defend. The lord is my light." Yeah, that's great and all, but I could really get into the music if you would shut the f*ck up. And that's what ruins it for me. Musically this is so appealing, but that sample interrupts my dream like Stacy did when that kid was holed up in the bathroom trying to rub one out to her mom. Holy sh*t Causality- Loungey raise your martini glasses where everything in the room is white and chrome. Electric piano chords and warm pads are what's on tap. Cooler than a Diddy linen party I didn't kill Big. No, really I didn't. Echospheres- Slow, jazzy, gangsta strutting. Although it does sound like a lovemaking scene in a bad movie with that distant horn blaring. Are you guys old enough to remember staying up late at grandpa's house because he had cable complete with the soft blurry focus that Skinimax is notorious for? No? Just me then? Never got to see anything good anyway. Just enough to get you excited and start looking at your cousin that is only a cousin by marriage. Let me make that perfectly clear. Not blood related. I would imagine that's how it would go. Fluffy Time- He does this a lot using far off sounds that promote introspection. Also gives the track some largesse. The break is smooth and allows a synth to peek in. Bright and sunny. Never Ending- More space lounge that seems to sample the Bee Gees. And that's cool, I liked the Bee Gees. The female vocal drips of cool with a vocoder effect. Wait...she's an android? I, uh...I knew that. *quickly puts flowers and box of chocolates in trash* Phoenix Sleeping- This is more space ambient with grainy communication samples of the moon landing. Melodic and beautiful. Swift- Sparkling synths, warm pads, and a glitchy rhythm set let you lean back in your Dorito crumb infested La-Z-Boy and immerse yourself in the layers. Cool acoustic guitar riffs give it a jazzy feel. Tasty! Interstellar- Having fun with a speak and spell. It's groovy and futuristic if you ignore the African chant, but somehow he makes it fit. Hey if we're 1000 years in the future ya think Africa is just gonna disappear? Don't think so. Why you gotta hate on the Dark Continent? Racist. Sleepwalker- With all the dubby lounge going on you should have your PhD in smooth by now. So beautifully textured it makes me feel like I'm floating in a bubble at normal speed whilst all my surroundings are in slow motion. Parabolic- Slow like I'm doing a moon walk No, not that one. It crawls along with pads and assorted twinklings. Relaxing to say the least. Amour Noblesse- I'm running out of adjectives to describe how good this music is. 16 tracks will do that to you. This dubby breakbeat tune has me dreaming of a beach vacation. Endless Dark- The ambient outro brings the space back into the equation. Runnng lights help me guide the ship back into the docking bay. The grim faces of the remaining crew tell you all you need to know. Really enjoyed this. He is very good with breakbeats and layered synths. I definitely recommend it for those that enjoy downtempo with a loungey space themed flair. There are 16 tracks so they are the perfect length to digest. Beatspace Psyshop Goastore Mdk
  7. Artist: Chronos Title: Space Sweets & Logical Beats EP Label: Soundmute Recordings Date: December, 2011 1. Free Falling 2. Space Cake Nikita Klimenko is back with a short 2 track EP. Those of you well versed in the downtempo arena are no doubt already familiar with the work of this project. I thought it was just Nick, but Discogs tells me that he now has a partner. Of course whoever entered this EP gave credit to three guys that sound like they head up a Mexican law firm. Steps to the Great Knowledge from 2007 was quite good and their collaboration with C.J. Catalizer on Quid Est Veritas was even better. Their new album Ispirational Power is out now so it's on my list. What? He just released a two part album this year? Prolific somebody isn't he? One thing I noticed is that the cover is the same as Inspirational Power, just a different color. So I guess these are two that didn't make the cut. If they were on the album, I would've felt pretty stupid paying for tracks that are on an album I plan to buy anyway. Free Falling- Is a high speed outer space track with synth arpeggios flying over fast percussive tappings. When the kick arrives things seem to slow down as we land in a green lush forest that is wet with dew. Melodic and relaxing even with the rapid tempo. Space Cake- When you distort a vocal sample in that manner, you cannot help but feel that we are in a futuristic cyber world. Love it. A world where new technology meets old world spiritualism. Effects all find their place behind the melody lines and fit together seamlessly as the dubby bass pounds away. There's a lot to listen to in a Shpongle type of way. Enjoyable, but almost all of his music is. Layers and melody with oodles of atmosphere. Really can't wait to listen to more tunes by him. Beatport Mdk
  8. Artist: Bell Size Park Title: Escape From Planet X EP Label: Dimensional Records Date: December, 2011 1. Escape From Planet X 2. Reptillianz 3. Lost In Time Belgian indy label Dimensional Records is nipple deep in goa trance with re-releases of several discs as well as a couple of compilations of their own. So along comes this name from the past with a short 3 track EP with tracks from his upcoming album. I don't really know much about Shlomy and his music, but in their short lifespan, this label has yet to produce a turd. So I thought I would check it out. The first track has a swirling lead that gets the heavy filtered treatment creating an image of a dragon kite dancing amidst a blue sky. Reptillianz is an evolving twisting meander complete with breakbeat and goa flavor. The track that stands out to me is Lost In Time. It's a downtempo piece with a high bpm. Know what I'm talking about? Surprisingly it grew on me with it's big pads and raindrop synths. It was interesting and I enjoyed listening to it, but it didn't set the house on fire. IF I had to give it a number...3.75/5 Beatport Mdk

This is an album that captures the essence of the perfect summer day while offering a rare glimpse of the ineffable, inviting you to “hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.” Through its ambitious, sprawling passages, A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy articulates a profound view of the universe’s tendency toward complexity, the twist of fate that gave rise to life and consciousness, and our morally ambiguous role in the mysterious and impenetrable cosmic drama unfolding all around us. 13. Artist: Easily Embarrassed Title: Tales of the Coin Spinner Label: EE Records Date: August, 2011 01 - The Truth (66 BPM) 02 - Blessed Day On Distorted Shape (79 BPM) 03 - Sylphesizer (100 BPM) 04 - The Coin Spinner (60 BPM) 05 - Moon People (70 BPM) 06 - The Old Ways (100 BPM) 07 - Little Match Sister (97 BPM) 08 - Triplets (95 BPM) 09 - Nothing But Spirit (82 BPM) 10 - Under The Jester's Hat (58 BPM) Before Jon Stewart was making fun of politics and the media he had a bit part in the Dave Chapelle vehicle Half Baked where he said, "Yeah, but have you seen it...on weed?" That stuck with me because that's how I used to be. I was that guy. Event Horizon was a great movie, but on weed? It scared the sh*t outta me. Silence of the Lambs? I thought I would suffocate because I couldn't catch my breath. It seemed like the infrared scene was an hour and a half long. Hell I even stood up in the movie theater during Alien Resurrection. Yeah, not one of my proudest moments. Like Rick James said, it's a helluva drug. Point is that's how I would watch all my movies. But you know...I got kids. Besides I was also the paranoid guy who swore the chick at Applebees knew I was high. What gave it away, the smell or the fact I had to point to the picture on the menu because I couldn't speak? So wasted. Don't do drugs kids. All roads lead to drinking out of a urinal. This is Jeffrey van der Schilden, Nick van der Schilden, and Peter Spaargaren with another free offering. Guys love making music and giving it away. This is their 3rd full length album and it is wonderful. The journey they take you on is a combination of the analog warmth of Jean Michel-Jarre and the celestial atmosphere of Vangelis. It's viewing the glare of a stare from an enormous window of a starship. Of Androids walking among us like it was the most natural thing in the world. Of the old man spinning coins describing a world the way it used to be. Futuristic samples stretch out between wavering choir pads and Vangelic synth runs. Ambient laments and breakbeats that harken back to the days when Crystal Method knew what the f*ck they were doing. Somehow they manage to work a reggae style beat in there and it doesn't seem the least bit out of place. The title track with its acoustic guitar melody is a melancholic short story of regret. Most of the melodies are of that type...and they do a great job mixing real and electronic elements with a lush cinematic scope. Nowhere is that more evident than in Moon People with its crawling eerieness that should make you a little...uncomfortable. An awesome trip through space that I cannot recommend highly enough. The fact that it's free is just icing on the cake. Good show boys! Ektoplazm Mdk
  14. Greeting fellow trancers! I've completed my first track since Protostar EP, released in 2011 by Underground Alien Factory Records. Despite being released in 2011, all four tracks from this EP were actually written between 2007 and 2009. So with the completion of this new track I finally ended my 3-year hiatus from music production! I will admit it's a little all-over-the-place, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. At 110 bpm it's kinda slow for Trance and kinda fast for Downtempo. It has three distinct movements - a break-beat intro, a trance movement, and a downtempo movement. Here it is: For some reason even when set to 720p YouTube really messes with the audio quality... especially in the very beginning. A higher quality version can be heard on my own site, on my Discography Page. As always, honest feedback is appreciated! /Malachyte
  15. Artist: Invisible Reality Title: Parallel Fantasy Label: Iono Music Date: February, 2011 1. Inkognito 2. Vanishing Rainbow 3. Pacifier Move 4. Criminal Code 5. Celestial Objects 6. Pure soul ghost 7. Be Real (Invisible Reality rmx) - Haldolium 8. Parallel Fantasy 9. Insomnia Iono Music is the king of progressive trance who put out more than that girl in high school. Hooking up with her is like riding a moped...fun as hell until someone sees you on one. One thing that you don't have to concern yourself with is whether a release is worth your hard earned dough. Invisible Reality are Shamil Abramov & Igor Sorin who are now based in Israel. I know what you're thinking. Is that f*cking dog just gonna take that from that b*tch ass cat? There is this pervasive idea that while Israeli artists were once the pioneers of a lot of trance they have since continued the downward spiral into a massive cheese tray. A lot of that well deserved. But I assure you that this project is no joke. They have released several EP's and their debut album Invisibility was as close to flawless progressive as you could get. This has been out for almost a year now and somehow it always finds its way into my playlist. Why? It's not close to being the most powerful music out there. I've heard tracks with more layers and melody. So what is it? First of all the production is superb. Every sound is crystal clear. And there are a lot of them on display in various iterations. Second, it sounds fresh with real instruments. Not the preset of a real instrument. This isn't your basic cut and paste 8 bar generic music. No pattern was followed, just intelligent arrangements. It tells stories with numerous twists and turns. Drum sounds are as varied as snowflakes with clever breaks. Third, the transitions and melodies are very smooth. There is a dark theme running through this album with eerie melodies and crunchy percussion. Put all of that together and you get an outstanding record that will take you far away. I urge you to give this your full attention and listen to this gem all the way through. This goes right up there with the best progressive this year. Psyshop Beatspace Saiko Sounds Goa Store Mdk
  16. mote. Dust Particle 01. - Dust Particle 02. - Widachi 03. - Life is Large Floating through the atmosphere, unnoticed, a microcosm of particles exists in the space that the human perceives as nothingness. So too, in the macroscopic universe, the human is an infinitely small speck, a particle, a mote. Dust Particle is the free debut EP release from mote from Brisbane, Australia; a carefully crafted sonic sculpture inspired by the journey of space dust floating through the atmosphere. With melodies shimmering like dust glinting in the morning sun, and orchestration that lulls you into a sweet melancholia; dust particle leaves you with a taste of things to come. 17. Artist: Various Title: Ambrosia Label: Ultimae Records Date: November, 2011 1. Sub Strat MAX MILLION AND GUSK 2. Light Tails MIKTEK 3. Distant Industries ONE ARC DEGREE 4. Principles of Gravity AES DANA 5. Homo Imperceptibilis SYGNALS 6. Sun Ritual SESEN 7. Hyades ALPHA TEK 8. V.A.N.T.A ASURA 9. Why MEMPHIDOS 10. Ominous Ride MIKTEK Ultimae. Nuff said? Sub Stata- Love that breakbeat they open up with. That sh*t is gritty. Which of course is the perfect yin to the yang of all the layers in this pig. Strumming guitar, pads that reach from horizon to horizon, and a memorable lead melody make this an ideal opener. Full...so full. . I would breast feed until I was 70. Light Tails- This track is aptly named because sparkling synths float behind the ever present churning bass. It's slow and drifting. There is a hypnotizing quality about it like how some spiders mesmerize their prey or Dave Chapelle does battle with Gochira... So hypnotic.... Distant Industries- One Arc Degree delivers a massive track with a big breakbeat and shimmering leads that become more distorted as they're filtered. People are talking in the background and I gotta wonder if he recorded this in a coffee shop. Hey, shut the f*ck up, I'm just here to get my danish. It doesn't impact the track thankfully, but with nice layering and flow it is very pleasing. It has floating qualities with vocal harmony and even a slight operatic riff. Principles of Gravity- Soft choir, stuttering synths, and the classic click and pop percussion and you know you are listening to an Aes Dana track. It's mid-tempo with pads ruling the atmosphere as it echoes with breakbeats. The choir gives it an overcast Propehecy feel where Christopher Walken does battle with the good angels. Moody sumb*tch. Homo Imperceptibilis- "You have 48 hours. That's the length of time it needs to adapt itself to our living conditions. Then it will be too late." The piano arpeggio is the focus as the effects and beat crowd around. Once that's gone, it's whizzing and whirring rivulets of electronica as the bass wobbles. The break has some cool percussive sounds and then it gains mid tempo status with a cello that sounds like Rena Jones is in the house. Long track that has a lot of phases so a good amount to chew on. Sun Ritual- Dawn breaking over the Himalayas perhaps? What began as a party of 5 is now whittled down to 3. Quite the mysterious intro at 20,000 feet. No beat until almost 3 minutes and it was worth the wait. It's a cross between hip-hop funky and soaring pads that leave you without oxygen. There is so many little touches here that they all add up to brilliance. It's unbelievable. There is talent and then there's, uh...talent. Yes, yes, that's really impressive. Hey fatty, when was the last time you saw your penis? Hyades- How do you follow up a brilliant track? With another one my dear Watson. This bubbles and meanders like a snake on the hunt for that dumb mouse who didn't see the writing on the wall. It's stand offish with attitude, bass growls and layers drip with atmosphere. This is the darkest track that oozes malevolence. Annnnnnnnd.....I crapped myself. V.A.N.T.A.- Am I the only one who starts singing the FANTA commercial when I see this track name? I am aren't I? Besides Aes Dana, this is the only other artist that I am familiar with. After all the great tracks from the "newbies" I never thought I would have to wonder if Asura could keep up. Well, I'm afraid he was outclassed on this one. I thought it was going to be a classic becuase the first 4 minutes are awesome downtempo with chopped up chants and deep pads, but I don't think it could run with the complexity of previous tracks here. Whereas the beginning was all dark mood, the melody is light and doesn't fit for me. Still good? Yes, of course. Why- With the brightest track on the compilation Memphidos proves that sunshine always follows the rain. It's a break beat with dream sequence synths. I was diggin' on the beat too. Real thumping. Nice, but I think it's misplaced on this compilation. It's like inviting a vegan to a barbecue. Yeah, nobody wants to stare, but we're wondering why the f*ck you didn't bring any carcass to the party. Ominous Ride- Miktek with another go and he's going crazy with the rain stick. But thankfully it's back to the dreary after that previous bright hiccup. Slowly evolving with pads and a sad piano melody pretty much descirbes this final effort. The story closes as the hero stares off into an uncertain future. This was really dark. Not dark in a satanic or get me the hell out of this forest way. More in a gloomy are we ever gonna see the sun again way. Composed mainly of Greek artists it's ironic that a land known for it's beautiful sunshine can deliver such moody and dark music. And I loved it. I believe all will agree that too much happy sunshine music is just as annoying as too much heavy dark stuff. This was wonderful and I have come to expect nothing less from Ultimae. Layer intensive, great effects and atmosphere, with a varied set of rhythms. Some artists you know and some you probably don't. Comgatulations to Fishimself for compiling, Mr. Vilius for the mastering, and the artists for their great work. Do not hesitate to get this if you like your chill on the darker side of things. I don't think I'm telling tales out of school by suggesting this could be downtempo album of the year. Psyshop Beatspace GoaStore Mdk

  19. Artist: Scopes Title: Glass of Water EP Label: Psyderweb Records Date: September, 2011 01 - Glass Of Water (70 BPM) 02 - Daze (59.5 BPM) 03 - Astronauts (70 BPM) 04 - After The Break (70 BPM) "This is a glass of water. Colorless...tasteless." The country known for windmills, tulips, and wooden shoes brings us Marcel Hartholt with a nice 4 track EP that makes me want a glass of water. It's slow downtempo beats and soft synth touches that make me feel like I'm swimming in the deep blue. Mellow isn't a strong enough word for how this goes down. I was curious to hear what 59.5 BPM sounded like and it's a whisker away from comatose. None of the tracks are over 6 minutes so it's easy to digest. Favorite? Probably After the Break because it just takes me away to a nice place. As always free to download from our friend at Ekto. Ektoplazm Mdk
  20. Artist: Auma Title: Interacting Processing Label: Enig'matik Records Date: August, 2011 01 - That Old Magick (100 BPM) 02 - Settle And Release (105 BPM) 03 - Machromatic (100 BPM) 04 - A Collision Of Craniums (100 BPM) 05 - Nude (95 BPM) This is Luke Peart based in Melbourne with an EP that sounds different than most. He makes downtempo but with influences that range from hip-hop to smooth jazz to glitch it definitely makes it's mark. It's free so there isn't any excuse not to check this out. Unless you are a bitter soul with popeye face. The Old Magick- This reeks of Ultimae quality with the cold percussion and skittering sounds. Perfect music for a rainy day with detuned tones and a funky break beat. The bass does the heavy lifting but all the effects create the spooky atmosphere. My favorite part is when the beat drops out for a second. Slick. If you're riding a train home from work and it's raining outside...this is your soundtrack. Settle and Release- Electric piano smoothness with rolling bass sweeps make this pull your coat closer to you as you cross the street in a rain shower kinda music. The hip-hop influence is on full display with the beat and the chopped up percussive funkiness. Music like this could make Steve Carell seem street. On second thought.... Machromatic- The BPM is only 100 but it sounds twice as fast as that with glitchy electronics. Soft pads float in sharp contrast to the hectic chaos below. It's like a weird melodic dream sequence. Catch the drill? A Collision of Craniums- "Here we see Mark and John taking a traditional hug and adding a more personal touch. Watch...how the foreheads gently collide." "Damnit b*tch, I said gently! We're not insured for that!" More gentle melodies that caress your head and tell you that everything is gonna be all right. What is that sound, a kid's piano? The layers are stacked and this is a very happy track. He transitions into a reverse sounding break and then you hear that cool sample. More smiles here than a dentist's office. Nude- This sounds like something Radiohead would do. Screechy, unintelligable vocals about some boy that doesn't understand him over strings and a break beat. Not my cup of tea. Good EP with the exception of that last track. Smooth music that deserves a listen. Ektoplazm Mdk
  21. Artist: Erode Title: Horizon Label: Tympanik Audio Date: July, 2011 1. 10950 2. Detect 3. Approach 4. Horizon 5. Overcome 6. Wither 7. - 8. Annoy 9. Disengage 10. Horizon (Kadrage Remix) 11. Brutal Romance (Erode Remix) - Deadlock This one goes out to Ivan because he likes Death Metal. And I'm afraid of it. I cannot recall how I came to know about this release, but here it is. This is Alexander Dietz and he used to be (is he still in it? Somehow I let my subscription to Kerrang lapse.) in a German metal band called Heaven Shall Burn. How uplifting and holy. Well now he shows his...umm, softer side I guess and presents us with his debut electronic album. It's filled with droning pads, repeated chords full of ambience as well as crunchy percussion. Most of it is downtempo and all of it sounds like the beautiful cover art looks. Done by Colin Marks of Rain Sound Design. Just thought I would give him a plug since he did such a great job. It's cloudy day music with an industrial bent as well as some haunting melodies. You can tell it was made by a guy who was into metal with the angry/dark track titles. But the music vassilates between pensive downtempo and outright rage with a remix of a Deadlock track at the end complete with the industrial screams that remind me a lot of FLA. Standouts? Well, I liked the track Wither with its soft pads and at times chaotic percussion. Gave me a feel of post apocalyptic regret. The interlude (-? What the f*ck is up with that title? That's what you came up with? How about...I dunno, B*tch gave me herpes or something.) sounded nice in its simplicity and the electronic scraping of Annoy was backed by a beautiful pad set that devolved into a drum n' bass hum. Pretty cool. Disengage had a nice soft synth pad before it devolved into a glitchy rhythm set. While not very deep it does stay within the confines of it's dark and mysterious theme. I say good for him for stepping outside his comfort zone and trying something different. I hope he continues in this vein as I would love to see how his music evolves. Not the metal though. I don't need my music screaming at me. I have a wife for that. You can get it here. Mdk

  25. 1 8 Hertz 9:22 2 Dying Dolphin 9:24 3 Second Breath (Vocal Radio Mix) Featuring – Aviatrix 5:07 4 360 7:49 5 Muse 7:16 6 Heartwork 8:18 7 Equator 7:13 8 In Motion 6:46 9 Second Breath (Original Mix) 7:37 10 Back To Earth 6:36 STYLE December 2011 Ambient chillout and blissful downtempo. Vacuum is a delicate and sensitive album of lush, evocative electronica where languid beats and dream-like soundscapes support subtle melodies. These softly unfolding themes heave with hypnotic beauty, yet always retain plenty of complementary shade and dignity. Most tracks have extended, unhurried introductions where Zero Cult's ambient atmospheres can fully spread like multi-coloured mists before the rhythmic material sets everything in motion. There are also plenty of beatless interludes where the percussion falls away completely and sometimes the whole melodic framework too, leaving the listener gliding upon faint air currents ready, anticipating the second coming. Overall, Vacuum has a fine balance of light and shadow, delivering attractive compositions that feed the attention whilst neatly avoiding the clichés of the psychill mainstream. IN DEPTH Vacuum opens gradually with a hypnotic interplay of misty pads and lustrous echoing effects; sonic winds curl around ascending tones and a gentle rhythmic structure slowly coalesces: vibes, synth arps, bass pulse and, about three minutes in, a ponderous programmed groove. This track - Muse - establishes what the album is all about: saturated colour; serene harmonies and breezy beats. Heartworks sees the trance elements of Zero Cult's sound solidify around a bubbling bassline and measured beat, but this denser sound quickly evaporates as the next track once again takes on a more weightless approach. The album has at its centre the gorgeous Second Breath, this is a wonderfully transportational piece that revolves around a mesmerising motif that carefully evolves and repeats with a tender, insistent intensity. 8 Hertz introduces a more mechanistic tone arising out of dark drones and reverberating voice samples: here a sparse, thumping kick and grumbling bass line give the track a slightly sinister edge. For the most part this is a purely instrumental album, however, just before the end there is a track that casts a different spell: a soporific, meandering piece of hazy euphoria where an unusual female vocal hangs in the air, haunting the synthetics with a wistful song from New Zealand's Aviatrix. ARTWORK The cover artwork for Vacuum features a hi-key design where a complex tangle of synthetic grey-white thorns lies upon a smooth, pale, infinite plane. Like some hollow, plastic urchin or structure of artificial cactus spines this jagged, monochrome formation is in stark contrast to the curving, fluid music within. I don't yet have a physical copy of this album and so can't comment on other artwork except to say that I have had a number of Cosmic Leaf releases over the years and the graphic quality is of a consistently high standard. OVERALL Israel's Emil Ilyayev returns here with his sixth album of downtempo trance and follow-up to the 2010 release: Clouds Garden. Once more on Cosmic Leaf Records, Zero Cult delivers a maturing sound that luxuriates deep within the reverie of ambient chillout. The ten tracks here include two versions of the deliriously laid back Second Breath: an original mix and a second vocal radio edit featuring Aviatrix with the distinctive voice of Kerensa Stephens. Dying Dolphin has an accompanying video aimed at raising awareness of the plight of these endangered mammals. The footage displays some of the horrors of the 30 000 or so dolphins slaughtered around the world each year. You can further learn of Vacuum at the Cosmic Leaf website or you might like to visit the official Zero Cult pages at Myspace and Facebook.
