Beatport is pretty neat. :) If you haven’t tried it already that is? It’s not 100% psy of course, but certainly a heavy focus on electronic music. Certainly on Techno and Psytrance and related subgenres. And I think it works well in tandem with Bandcamp. Since I tend to find more obscure less known/indie stuff on Bandcamp. And beatport provides all the major labels I would think.

Only downside to Beatport from my experience is that the previews are rather short. On the plus side Beatport is extremely DJ-friendly. It’s really geared towards DJ’s. For Techno I think it’s the biggest platform besides Spotify/Youtube.

Guess I will finally have to make the switch to Beatport. For whatever reason I just really hate how the site looks and find it cumbersome to navigate...I think I've bought like one thing from there ever, many years ago. But they do have way more stuff than Psyshop had

  2. I'm SO bummed about psyshop, I literally pull it up just about every day to check new stuff that's come out. It was a great place to buy CDs since the shipping from germany was crazy low. A while back I transitioned into buying only digital, partly because of bandcamp but definitely in part because of how easy and convenient it was on Psyshop.

Are there any other psytrance focused digital distro sites like Psyshop? Bandcamp is great of course, but I really loved having a place that was Psy only where you could see all the new releases, charts, etc and search by artist/label/year/etc

  3. I really hate updating things so I'm still on Cubase 5. I feel like it pretty much does what I need. That said, I'm wondering if there are any significant reasons why I should update now that Cubase is on version 10 and I am really far behind? I didn't like the look of 7, felt like it was trying too hard to be Ableton and I don't recall it having any must-have features that would justify an update. But what do you guys think about the newest version(s)? Is there some kind of significant improvement in sound quality (is that even possible?) or something else that justifies an update?

  5. Before I was writing psy/dance music I was working with different styles and would have the bass and kick overlap, so I got in the habit of making the bass a different note from the kick, usually a perfect fifth but at least something from the same scale. Now that I'm working on psy where the kick and bass pretty much never overlap I'm wondering if there is any reason not to keep them the same note? Like, I've got some tracks now where the kick is C and the bass is G and I'm at the mastering phase and thinking well damn if they were the same than I could just hit that C root freq and work on all the low end at once, evenly (thinking about tools like Infected Mushroom's Pusher). What are you guys' thoughts on it?

  6. Have you heard the new Ulf album "Inland"? So fucking good, he is a master. For tribal stuff (some of this is more on the dark ambient side but its all kinda industrial-y) I like Herbst9, Geomatic, Vasilisk, Rukkanor, Flint Glass, Wychdoktor, Raison d'etre side project Svasti-ayanam, Exotoendo, Inner Vision Laboratory - Spellbound EP (his stuff is great but that ep specifically is super tribal), Maculatum, Phelios, and FLA Vector & Tribal AD for a less good This Morn Omina vibe. Also I recommend my own stuff cause i've got a lot of tribal bits, def influenced by Ulf and TMO

  7. Not much to add here and I mostly agree with what everyone else as already said but figured I'd comment anyway. I agree that Artifact303 - Feelings is an absolute monster of a track. Probably his best one and one of the best neo goa tracks ever for sure. I think Artifact303 in general might be my favorite neo goa producer, tracks like Magnetic Fields and Delirium are top neo goa for sure...but they have minor issues which prevent them from being like, the BEST tracks. Psy-H and Mindsphere both have some really huge tracks as well. I also love GoaD; while not groundbreaking I feel like that's a new project that perfectly nails that "goa" sound.

  8. Yeah I get that, if you want to do the classic "acid" sound than you gotta have a 303 (or clone). But I'm not looking to do that, and I think for psy/goa there are so many other possibilities that a 303 isn't crucial unless, like antic said, you really want that specific style of sequencing with the accents and slides (which is indeed cool, but hardly essential). I guess I'm just on the fence as to whether I NEED that. Also, the future retro seems really big in comparison to the usual 303 clones, only a point because I don't have a lot of free surface area in the studio at the moment

  9. Hey guys, got an opportunity to get a future-retro revolution but wonder if it's worth it? I've been looking at getting some kind of 303 clone for a while but I'm worried about it being too limited overall - as in, it can do "that 303 sound" and nothing else. Like, to be honest it feels like I barely even hear people using the typical 303 sound in goa/psy anymore and I've got plenty of other synths with a lot more features. Just wondering what you guys think about 303 clones and if they're still relevant.
