Rastaliens "Freestyle" - an old favourite with a dark melodic sensibility and killer basslines. Sits poised on the cusp between Goa and psytrance, a bit like "Classical Mushroom". Yet another wonderful trance album with bad cover art.

I wonder if it is worthwhile to distinguish between dark and hard, though of course there is much fertile crossover between the two. For me, Darshan are more on the hard side than the dark. They tend towards science fiction rather than horror, if that makes sense. Either way, Darshan are indeed excellent, though I prefer the first album.

Thanks, that Rastaliens totally sounds like my jam - Classical Mushroom is literally the first first psytrance album I ever heard and needless to say it opened my eyes!

Definitely agree dark doesn't necessarily mean hard, in fact I don't like hard psytrance at all.  By "dark", I mean dark themes, stories, etc.  Doesn't have to be horror per se, for example the Cybernetika album I mentioned is dark sci-fi which I love (it's also quite hard, so now I'm contradicting myself!)

Well the thread is from 2008 and scythe of orion came out in 2010.

But yes, a monster album that one. I actually have it on CD.

Lol, yes I realised after posting but was too lazy to edit.

Do you know of any other good dark albums that released after 2008 and aren't mentioned here?

  3. Been listening to this comp in the car lately. Not sure how I overlooked "Didgeridreams" before, but omfg it's such a fantastic track. By far my favourite from nebula meltdown.

Overall, a really strong and atmospheric compilation

  4. Shit, that's a really well-written review.

the sound of electrons flowing through circuits, tamed by analog gates, shaped by self-oscillating filters and orchestrated by voltage-controlled sequencers is like no other. There's chaos and randomness, there's imperfections and there's life.

    Quote of the year!

I would never have given this release the time of day, but now I'm super-excited to give it a go.

  5. Anybody who isn't sure whether or not they like this should try listening loud, at night, driving on a highway. Just be careful, it'll make you want to go faster and faster!

It's proper trance, and yes, it's very repetitive. The first 6 songs are, in my opinion, excellent. Ideal for certain moods and activities. You just need to explore them to find out when the music works for you. It's worth it.

  6. May I strongly suggest that you wait until you can save some money to buy the Zion604 edition? The tracks on the 2nd cd are really worth it (some ppl actually prefer them) and it only costs 10 euros. They do not sell that fast anyway so there is no reason for you to panic.

    This.

Thanks for the recommendation. Just listening on Bandcamp now, only on track 3 of CD2 and absolutely loving what I'm hearing. Will buy ASAP

  7. I haven't got money to buy this yet, but I've listened to the mixed album on soundcloud many times, and I'd have to say it's something I keep coming back to over and over. I can't put my finger on exactly what it is I like (that's always the case for me, which is why you'll never see a long review from me), but it's the most exciting album of 2016 for me. It almost feels retro, in a good way, like all my favourite psytrance tricks/sounds have been condensed, cleaned up and perfected for my enjoyment. Great stuff, will buy ASAP

  8. Very unfortunate there hasn't been a sequel. It's been 6 years already!

    I know...

In some ways, it might be a good thing. It's hard to imagine anything improving on this. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though, if the alienapia guys are out there reading this.

  9. Im going to keep spamming comments on this release for a long time. Like the guy on the first page said: THE FUCKING GATE!!!

@14:00 is one of the best moments in goa trance. This album will be forever in my heart.

  10. Cybernetika had a well deserved crushing victory in the voting. 11 minutes of some of the most epic music I've heard in a long time :)

Yes, he's just unbelievable. Ranks up there with alienapia on goapocalipsis as one of my all time favourite artists.

  11. And Triptonite (Playa mix), what you say? Magic

You're not wrong, mate. People can say what they like about etnica and their later output, but those musicians were true masters. The ability to create something like that is just unbelievable
