  1. This is great. I get lambasted for saying something vaguely negative for an album, but you guys can hit on IM as much as you like.

Well, I'm going to join in anyway. What a come down from Classical Mushroom (lots of melodies in that one guys, it's hailed a classic for a reason) - it doesn't help that this album is... rubbish. Nu-metal + psy ? Christ, if you want cheese, this is it.

Actually, "Becoming Insane" starts well as a very melodic psy tune, but when those dumb powerchords come in, and those vocals... ugh. Artillery? Am I now listening to Limp Bizkit or some such rubbish? There are some interesting moments though, Forgive Me starts as a nice funky bigbeat tune but I'm not sure about the vocoded vocals. Special Place is a fairly decent psy piece, Before has some really nice filtered leads, and a great breakdown. But on other psy tracks they're painfully generic, and on the more poppy stuff they just get very cheesy. Yes, cheesy, as in properly, tastelessly bad.

One day perhaps the elitists here will learn that melodic doesn't necessarily equal cheese. This album, however, doesn't demonstrate that; head for Classical Mushroom, instead or, hell, why not some Sattel Battle, or SynSUN?.

  2. Labyrinth was Film Trance. Overproduced, undercomposed full-on tracks with lots of ethnic drumming (only good thing about it), "world" elements and vocals. All of it came across as being bombastic, overly pretentious... and completely totally unmemorable.

So yes, lets hope this is nothing like that. (Bible Of Dreams is much, much superior - especially Jardin de Cecile)

  3. It's been a while since the last good bashing party here on psynews. DON'T STOP IT NOW

Damn, I need to dust of F.O.L. and form a 2nd opinion.

I want in on the bashing  !

I didn't intend to start a bashing party, Skel. But it seems clear that there are a few too many people here that like to bash me (and others) for expressing an opinion, then have the audacity to claim that I'm saying to others that they cannot have one. Which I never did. Honest.

Still, if you have one on F.O.L., post away (perhaps in the reviews forum, though - we're seriously off-topic here :P ).

Edit: Thanks Seraph. Maybe it's my writing style, but I wasn't trying to be offensive.

  4. To sum up: A very fine debut album by Elad. Eclectic as always from Gi’iwa Production – and with enough depth to keep open-minded fans of versatile trance entertained for a long time… Picky neo full-on purists need to look elsewhere though… This is glowstick repellent. The rest of us will treasure this for a long time. Enjoy!

Very much in agreement with you here, DP. This is an awesome album. Apart from the terrible bonus track, and the pretty offensive leads on Ghat Whore and Strangless, this is one of the very best, most creative and unique psytrance albums I've heard in AGES. Shame that there are so many picky neo full-on purists on this forum, really. <_<

Edit: And yes, one of the best album covers in years.

  5. Many people who are into the 'dark' style do not even agree that it is indeed trance music.

I can't find it at the moment, but I remember reading over at Cosmosis's website, Bill's theory that psy/goa trance - and their related subgenres - are a marriage of Indian ragas and 4/4 beats, 90s synths etc. Considering how minimalist and repetitive ragas are (that's an observation, not a criticism!) musically, I can believe this. Even with producers such as Derango (and now Cybernetika :)), who you could argue are even closer to this "pure" form of trance than something like Sattel Battle or Hallucinogen.

Um, I guess the point of this rant is that, whether I like this stuff or not (and you all know I don't), it's certainly trance and I wouldn't argue otherwise.

  6. Not all trance is melodic

I noticed. That's a real problem with the genre.

And Cybernetika released these tunes for free.

If you don't have anything good to say then STFU.

Your comments are about as constructive as horseshit on my elbow.

I wasn't going to respond to this, but you obviously didn't notice that I wasn't trying to be offensive...

Sure, I'm glad to see that Cybernetika is still making music and releasing it for free. I hope he doesn't take my comments as an attack on him, because that is not my intention. I was genuinely disappointed to find that he has changed his style into something I find to be more generic, and less... musical, quite frankly. I should hope that Cyb takes my opinion like everyone elses, and either takes it into consideration and improves his music, or just ignores it and goes his own way. I'd applaud him either way.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but your post, Gutty, is about as offensive and worthless as the horseshit you seem to be growing on your elbow. I'll bet it really stinks. :P

Yes, I loathe unmelodic dark psy and find it to be a pox on the psy genre, helping to make the genre look as dumb as many ignorant IDM lovers consider it to be. But at least I'm trying to give a reason for my dislike.

  7. no? how about Halava? Procs? Electrypnose? Ocelot then? Penta perhaps?

If you are going to look for 'dark' to bash then stop naming derivative acts and go to the source.

we did man, a lot of these main acts have a very good idea of writing a cheesy ass line to peak on your 7th roll of the night...

and they were looking for something a little more complex just like cybernetika and that effort needs to be applauded.

"More complex" in this case just seems to mean extra sound effects, tempo changes and breakdowns. All that stuff is fluff and nonsense if I can't even remember the track just after I listened to it! (Contrast that with Safi's wonderful "DNA" off Shout Aluma which will remain with me till I snuff it.)

As for those other "dark" acts, look, I have no problem with dark styles in theory, and Cybernetika's first album release was in this style but still a lot more melodic than this new stuff. I liked it because of that. Which of Halava, Procs, Electrypnose, Ocelot and Penta actually bother to write some decent lead lines? Because that's what I look for in trance, be it goa, psy, progressive or whatever.

  8. On The Tron is Synsun's best work ever. Just an amazing piece of art, leaves me speechless everytime.

Agreed, completely. I'd say it's even better than anything off Symphonic Adventures.

A shame, then, that about half of the trance disc is just new versions of old tracks. "On The Tron" is just "Tron" off Phoenix. It's an awesome tune, guys, but why were you so lazy not to include more NEW material on the trance disc? :(

  9. This is an AWESOME album. No tracks (except 13) go far over 6 minutes. Most are 5. All of them are SEGUED. Yes, a psytrance album that is really properly segued, and not just with some crossfaded pads and effects. Once one track is over, the next one immediately follows it. This is not your average 77-minute 11 7-minute track album which, inevitably, is difficult to sit through in one go.

Lots of great melodies and leads everywhere, and cool breakdowns. Ah, Safi Connection would be proud. :) Work In Space is the best track, without question - it's fucking unstoppable, with a series of instantly memorable lead melodies. When that final squelchy acid riff comes in towards the end, I dare you to not get up and dance your arse off. But a lot of other tracks have great lead riffs and basslines: Sounds Cool, Fuck It, Rabel Rebel, Sratim Metzuyarim, and 2 Step Chase.

Ghat Whore and Strangeless suck though. People who complain that Safi is cheesy and actually find THESE tracks listenable need a kick up the arse. These two tracks are ruined by VERY obnoxious "lead" sounds (right at the start of Ghat, for example), and neither of them really have any memorable leads in the first place. Ghat has a really dumb two-note bassline throughout, and what the HELL is going on with that country loop that plays at 3:24? It's idiotic, not even funny. Strangeless starts off better with an ascending lead and bassline, but at about 1:40 some really silly strings come in - and what the hell is going on with those trumpets at 3:00? The hidden bonus track at the end of the album is even worse, bloody terrible in fact.

I'm only pointing out these two weaker tracks because they are the exception to the norm: skip them - everything else is great GREAT fun and is such a welcome reprieve from all the endless generic full-on artists that still appear these days.
