    This just in from Trancentral:

     

    RIP Bansi! 
    It is with great sadness we found out that Joseph Bansi Quinteros of G.M.S has passed away this morning in Amsterdam. Bansi was diagnosed with cancer a year and a half ago, battled the illness, kept on making music and even performing around the world. Our condolences to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. His musical legacy is huge and it will stay with us - post your favourite track from one of his many projects (GMS, 1200 Micrograms, 3 of Life and many others) so we can remember him by his music.

     

     

    RIP dude... you will forever be remembered on Festival dacefloors around the World... :(

    Hi there, long time no see :)

     

    So I was listening John Digweed's Transitions and he started the show with a Sebastian Mullaert remix of Moby... I kept thinking "now where did I hear that name before??"

    then it came to me: aaaah, this is none other than Son Kite... I didn't even think he was still into music making these days. Well, thought I'd share it with you, I really like it :)

    Searching for a festival to attend with gf (1st one)

    I'd definately recommend Space Safari as a spring-time warm-up for bigger festivals. Great atmosphere, friendly people, good music. But if you want to go all-in, then I'd say Ozora, like Squid said, the main advantage of big festivals is that there are loads of scenes and there's a little something for everyone, you never get bored.

    Now the main disadvantage with going all-out to a great festival from the start is that once you go to smaller venues after that it feels a bit dissapointing (presonally I've stopped going to small parties all together because I find them too boring compared to big festivals...)

    haha I was just about to post something in the same lines and saw this :)

     

    Yep indeed, psytrance is "in" once again. KSHMR is pretty big and he basically does goa-influenced EDM and lately there is this track that is getting more and more airtime on daytime radio in these parts... yes, psytrance on DAYTIME commercial radio! Who would've though that day would come?

    Well ok, to tone down things a bit let's not forget that most of the golden days goatrance period ALSO saw (not-so) underground producers like AP - People Can Fly or MWNN - Teleport on mainstream dance shows... which is how many people in the 90s hear of goatrance in the first place.

    So after an *ahem* mystical experience last weekend, Scatterbrain's track Mexican Jesus came to my mind as clear as day even though I haven't listened to it in years and years. When I got home, I took out Infernal Angels and gave it another listen and was amazed by how fresh it still sounded after more than 10 years! So I started looking around if he ever made a second release and he did. Amazingly this was pretty low profile (well, I guess that the people who were into Infernal Angels when it came out aren't really into the scene anymore so I'm not surprised).
    Anyway, I was blown away by this, it is much more morning-oriented than Infernal Angels, pretty melodic and very few twisted sounds that were his old trademark. I don't know if people into his old sound will apreciate it (or even if they still care to listen to it), but personally, I like it a LOT.

    Twisted Mind is my fave one here, morning trance the way it should be done, not too commercial full-on, not too progressive, not too neo-goa, just no-nonsense good melodies and trancy ambience.

    The Awakening is also very melodic, there even is a singing sample in there, that makes it sound almost EDM, not sure if purists will appreciate it but personally I loved it!

     

    Definately one of the most undersetimated releases of the last few years! Alas no "Mexican Jesus pt.II" but definately give this a try :) 4/5

    First of all when I listened to it I was a bit WTF?? I remember that Suntrip promised us a new wave of night-oriented acidic goa, and somehow I thought this would be it, given the name and cover... However it is not at all the case, which, after a few more listens, I have decided is not necessarily a bad thing.

     

    I would describe it as some sort of crossblend between newschool and progressive, I get what Trance2MoveU is saying with the dancing bit although in reality the music FEELS slower than it really is (BPM-wise we are pretty much in the 120-130 BPM range aka progressive territory) . Personally I find that the intro track is the PERFECT track for driving in the evening and watching the sun set... the kind of track you listen to and start wandering off, forgetting you're listening to something in the first place, feeling wierd and then all of a sudden once it's over you just realized almost 10 minutes have passed without realizing it. I must admit that I haven't felt that in a LONG time!

     

    I must admit that while listening to it the term "new beat" came to mind: the long lost art of playing 45 RPM records at 33, giving it a hypnotic feel... maybe the evolution in music has come around full circle again? I would be happy if it did. :)

    ummm well, I don't want to come out as some grumpy old man who always complains but... once again we get the "more of the same Suntrip neo-goa formulaic stuff"...
    Ok, on a positive note, the intro track Dancing Shiva is a DANCEFLOOR KILLER!! (no, really ;)) The tension-release around 4:00 OMG!!! If that echoing-synth sound gave me goose-bumps. Ok, I haven't listened to much psy in 2015 but form what I've listened I can easily call this the track of the year. Proof that there is still room for surprise in a genre that is more than 20 years old :)

     

    Well, too bad the rest of the album isn't like that (or maybe just that the bar was set so high by the first track that the rest seems pretty forgetable). Honorable mention goes to Mars Base Alpha where the artists seem to (finally?) realize that good goa doesn't always have to be ultra-fast and over-the-top to work, just having a slower pace and a mysterious atmosphere can also do wonders :)

    And last but not least, the return of the mandatory down-tempo album closer Kraft Karamel. Hmm, not bad at all I must say, some nice acid lines which sound soft and agressive at the same time, I really like this one a lot.

     

    So, basically you have one absolute killer track, one good but not great one and one very good downtempo track, among pretty forgetable generic-sounding filler material. Still, those 3 tracks are definately worth buying the album IMO 4/5

    Heyyy Yahel is back!! Well, he never really left but his newer stuff didn't really have much to do with psytrance anymore. This time around, like it seems to be following the trend these days and made a "back to the roots" album which I think will get people who where in the scene 15 years ago (like myself) very interested.

    Sadly, with most "back to our roots" style albums, artists either choose to do crappy full-on remixes of their tracks... or to do crappy neogoa remixes of their tracks, either way you end up thinking that the originals were so much better. Well, Yahel chose a different route, it's more on the progresive side of things, although I definately wouldn't label it as typical progressive, there are some nice airy tunes in there.

     

    First of all, yes, that is not a typo or some name coincidence, we are talking about "How much is the fish" Scooter but don't run away, let me tell you that the original Rhapsody in E was made at a time when germans were the masters of hard trance and Scooter started off with that sound before moving on to more commercial stuff. And believe it or not it I find it to be the best track here! That is actually the best intro I've listened to all year!

     

    Another track that probably caught your attention is Last man in the universe aaaaah it's been such a long time since I've listened to the original, I actually consider it to be in my top 20 goa tracks of all time. So how does the remix sound? Well... an interesting effort to bring it back to modern tastes, I DO like it, although I still find the original better. Still, if someone plays this during a festival you can be sure I'll be dancing my ass off on it ;)

     

     

    The other gem here is the remix of Soul OMG that oriental female voice in the intro gave me goosebumps :) A bit of the shame they started throwing all the typical prgoressive elements at the track like the triplets starting at minute 5:00. Still, as far as progressive goes this is one of the best tracks out there IMO.

     

    Special mention for So What Happens Now, with an interesting progression that reminds me of twilight but in a progressive way, I must say it is the most original track here.

     

    Conclusion:

    Like most "remember-how-good-I-used-to-be" albums, I can't say that this will win any rewards since it mainly makes you want to reach out for the originals and give them another listen. Still, it did make me smile and there are some very good moments in there. Although definately not the album of the year IMO, still a good above-average 4/5 from me :) Faves 1(!!), 3(!), 6, 7(!!)

    It's all about who promotes your music... if a big name label likes your stuff and starts promoting it (and you accept to sell out) then you're set for life ;)

     

    In the particular case of IM, none other than Steve Aoki is a big fan and released their new stuff under his label Dim Mak.
