  1. Currently on a horror movie/horror series spree. Watched: Annabelle Comes Home, which I really enjoyed. Also watched Brahms 2 at the cinema, knowing full well that it was a mediocre movie at best. And it sure was, the story was lacking, still there's not much to chose from within the horror genre right now at the cinemas. I still enjoyed it for what it was, it's always nice to see how the effects and designs are in new horror movies, and also if there's any good music/sound effects. Watching The Haunting of Hill House, and very much enjoying it. And just started The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Perhaps a horror movies/series thread could be started, if there isn't already one suitable. Seeing as this genre is more popular than ever. They will also show a lot of classic movies here in Sweden this autumn in the cinemas, among them The Shining. Which I'm very much looking forwards to see in the best format possible. I've only seen it on VHS, DVD, Bluray, TV and on streaming services. Also watching Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, not sure what to make of it yet, so far I haven't felt anything remotely scary. The setting is quite nice though, the typical high school/halloween narrative, inspired a lot by Stephen King it seems. Complete with corn fields, scarecrows and a haunted mansion.
  2. Allright! Sounds legit then reading now about them. I just assumed it was the usual type of petitions people share on fb.
  3. I'm listening to those artists now on youtube and spotify for the first time except if there's some overlap with the tracks on Ormions youtube examples of the style, anyone has good playlist on spotify? What I've found so far that I really like are these DJ-mixes: First two are Dark Psy/Twilight and one with Dark Forest stuff:
  4. It's interesting to note how things have changed. I'm halfway through now with The Shawshank Redemption. What a contrast to these more gory/violence obsessed movies. Such a classy movie so far, I mean despite taking place in a rather horrendous setting(a prison). The focus is never the violence per se, it's just there as a natural part of the setting/story. And sure there might be some bruised up faces, and people getting very violently treated by the correctional officers or their inmates. But yeah it's dealt with in a subtle way which carries the story forward in the best way possible. I'm quite sure that if this book would've been made into a new movie today, the violence would probably have taken center-stage with nauseating amounts of blood and closeups.
  5. Yeah good point. And besides I'm always very sceptical to all these "sign up for this, sign up for that petition, donate money whatever" Could be some pyramid scheme for all I know. These days anything that has the potential to come across as a benevolent cause, has the potentail to be used for massive economical gains. As we're seeing right now with face masks, some people are counting em benjamins right now for sure. Probably a lot of masks manufactured in China. Sometimes I wonder if it would ring the same if the slogans we see today like "Wear A Facemask" would be changed to "Buy A Facemask @ amazon.com or wish.com". Or perhaps Gucci, since it has become the hottest fashion accessory ever. *Sorry for thread hijacking, but I think it's slightly related somehow. And this is the offtopic section after all.
  6. Aha haha, well I hope they someday release all ther best algos in a plugin, the ones used in the Eventide's most used in goa trance in the 90s that is. Hopefully this Eventide plugin can do atleast something slightly reminiscent of that. Although I'm not expecting too much. Atleast it seems Eventide are waking up and realizing that for example Valhalla is closing in on their turf. Anyone has any experience/opinion on this Swedish plugin? Seems good for distortion on separate channels.
  7. Well it gets even more confusing here in Sweden, were "Forest Trance/Scandinavian Forest Trance?" or whatever they call it is popular as well. Also very dark, perhaps more intensely shroomy/organic/trippy? I think this labeling has become a bit redundant, as most of this could fit under the same umbrella, namely a darker form of Psytrance/Dark Psy/music for the night sets/Twilight music/whatever. :) The people at the party sure as hell don't know that the tracks played on the same night/in the same set are "different subgenres". It's all night music, darker in the mood, some darker than others, but hey that's just variation at play, which is inevitable. It's not like there is a degree system/scale for how dark the music should be in order to pertain to any of these subgenres. I think what this is about really is slight geographical differences/touches to the same genre (Dark Psy). Which has then for some unknown reason been labeled as different subgenres. It's like before when we within the old school Goa Trance scene had, "UK Goa Trance" Israeli Psytrance/Goa Trance" "Swedish Goa Trance" "Italian Goa Trance" etc. Very different in style for sure at times, but surely belonging to the same genre. And made even more confusing due to how it was marketed. For example many of the acts we today categorize as Goa Trance from the UK, was marketed as Psy Trance, simply because the term Goa Trance had fallen out of fashion. I also think the music will be labeled according to what record label it was released on, "oh it was released on that label" then it must be yadayada, because they focus on yadayada. I'm almost getting the impression that the artists don't want be associated with the older term Dark Psy? And that the newer subgenres are more in vogue, hence more suitable to be associated with? Like a marketing hype/buzz word. So what happened with Dark Psy and Dark Full On? Did those genres cease to exist when people changed their preference/style description of the subgenre they identify with and the scene/scenes they participate in? For example I remember that Goa Gil was a household DJ name first with Goa Trance, then with Dark Psy. What does he play/promote today? Any of the above genres? Or maybe he quit, I have no clue. Perhaps it became to confusing with the subgenre-nitpicking. I have this scenario playing in my head while reflecting upon this topic. I Imagine some party people arriving at a forest/outdoors party here in Sweden, and asking either where the Techno floor is, or where the Psytrance floor is. Okey they'll be guided in the appropriate direction, and upon reaching the Psytrance floor, the psy fan might say hmm this is too cheesy, it's full-on! I want darker music. OK just hold on, the next DJ will play that in an hour. I don't think it matters then if the DJ plays Twilight, Dark-Psy, Forest Trance, British Psytrance, or South African Psytrance. The person will most likely be satisfied with the dark music on offer, unless the person is a psynews forum member that is. Then the PDF shared here will be taken out, and the style identified and classified accordingly. So therefore I think this interchangeable labeling/terminology is quite unnecessary for most people attending these parties.
  8. Maybe this new Eventide plugin Shimmerverb could be useful for goa, anyone tried it yet? https://youtu.be/T9MCwivHN10
  9. Yeah that would make sense, it started of good though, and it sure had its moments. But overall it felt a bit over the top in a cartoony way, which might've been its charm to some of course. It reminded me of watching something like an anime series. The last half of the movie it just went a bit overboard I think and lost any subtlety. Visually it was interesting in the first half, and the cinematography was not bad. Very pristine image and good balance of light and dark in the scenes. But yeah the movie became a bit over-exaggerated as the plot unfolded. And the gorey aspect as you say didn't really have the shock-value it surely must've had upon release, compared to the uncanny realism achieved in some of the more recent movies/series. The scene of the first murder victim, was the most intense and well-made I think. It looked really good and the tension was palpable in that house.
  10. NHJO-sans words of wisdom still rings true to this day: "Remember, it's not you who do the drugs, it's the drugs who do you." Recited from chapter 7, page 43 in NHJO's great illuminated scriptures, The Encyclopedia of Infinite Knowledge.
  11. Watching Seven, The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. *OK finished Seven, what an overhyped meh movie.
  12. I would hope that they have or else it's just marketing gimmicks, when the loudspeaker companies, promote their latest designs as having a better frequency response and what not. Would be interesting with some input from someone who has used for example genelecs in the 90s and today. The form factor of the actual speakers themselves is very different atleast. And this type of technology I'm guessing wasn't a thing perhaps for home studios? https://www.gearslutz.com/board/high-end/1273993-monitors-speaker-room-correction-dsp-like-genelecs-sam.html And I remember it beeing a very big thing when all the Israeli artists started using the Dynaudio monitors, which I surely would guess had something to do with the quality of their mixes? Infected Mushroom etc.
  13. Kinda similar, not sure of the source of the sample:
  14. Lmao and that's a wrap for today, enough psy-trance for this weekend I think. That's like some Günther or Basshunter meets Psy type stuff. If that's where things are heading, then I think a Crazy Frog & Infected Mushroom collab isn't too far away.
  15. I'm currenly watching the horror movie Hereditary on Netflix. I really like it so far, quite original. I hope it keeps on and gets even better. No cheap jump-scares or other typical tricks so common today so far atleast. *Update, still not finished it and things could change, but so far it's not really a horror movie per se. More like a drama movie with some supernatural touches. Not really sure what to think of this movie, it's very original, and visually nice, but it lacks something. I'm leaning on kinda meh. :D It's certainly not scary. Which was what I was looking for, something that gives you the chills. *update Hereditary gets more intense now towards the end, so I'll save my final verdict until it's done still have 36 minutes left of it. Yeah done now it became super creepy at the end. Really deranged stuff. Very nice twist in intensity levels in the final act, and certainly became more horror than just drama with some supernatural touches. So the gradual development was really good, they kinda lure the viewer into somekind of comfort zone, so that when you're guard is down they shock you.
  16. I would argue that what has gotten better, is the plugins, and the computers that they run on. Which makes for greater sound fidelity within the DAW's. I'm not saying it's better or worse than the analog and virtual analog counterparts, but the increase in quality in that domain is noticeable. As it's part of the evolution of the computers. In the same way that people who work with 3D-rendering can achieve phenomenal results faster nowadays, there is a lot more CPU/Ram power available today to get very clean sounds from within your DAW. It's a bit like if you compare Toy Story 1 to the CGI movies of today. It's on another level today, all thanks to more efficient computers and evolved software. Of course better CGI or better plugins doesn't necessary equal to better movies or music all the time. But the improved tools are there atleast. And music production is much more accessible today, and thanks to tutorials on youtube, the accumulated knowledge is far more widespread, it used to be a selected few studio wizards who possesed the know-how. The advent of stronger laptops has also taken the music production out of the mystical studio environent, and enabled people to work with music wherever they are, so people might be more skilled today perhaps in some aspects, certainly I suspect when it comes to micro-adjustments/finetuning songs and having total control over every parameter. That type of detailed work is much more difficult with hardware synthesizers/mixing desks. As the workflow has been streamlined within the computer. Another aspect which I surely think has evolved, is the loudspeakers/studio monitors. And I would assume that the audio devices people use at home to listen to music has developed somewhat as well, since most people listen to music on essentially different forms of computers (smart-TV's, smartphones etc). So the computational power increase has benefitted the listener as well. As there are some very nice sound algoritms employed to enhance the listening experience on different platforms/devices. For example I would argue that a PS4 or Xbox One Console is a far more advanced audio player, than what I had available in 1996. Heck even my smartphone is more advanced, as it can access a huge library of music, and there are lots of professional headphone options to chose from, even studio headphones. I had a portable CD player perhaps, and a PS1 which could play regular CD. Then some crappy HIFI stereo or something with a CD-player. And probably some very basic headphones. I mean there was high-end stuff as well of course for the dedicated audiophile. But yeah nowadays CPU power is on another level, providing all sorts of enriched experiences. After all there is a good reason why old music and movies get remastered. They simply don't sound as good on modern systems as they used to sound on their contemporary systems. Or they simply sound like rubbish sometimes by todays standards. A good example is if you go and watch some 80's movie in the cinema today, even although they are remastered, they often lack the clarity of todays best examples. And that is related to this since it's also about the evolution of the music production/sound engineering. Some will argue that a few selected albums have stood the test of time better than others, and that can be true as well. However I wouldn't be surprised if even the Hallucinogen - Twisted album gets remastered in the future, so that we can hear even more details in the already super-detailed sonic textures. @AP regarding the effects processors, like Eventide, I agree they still kick ass, and at the same time todays effect plugins can do things I never thought would be possible within a DAW/computer 20 years ago. It's just amazing to even think about. That I think is the key to the evolution of the electronic music sound of today, the fact that a small computer can be so many things simulanously. The computer acts as an advanced multi-channel multi-FX unit, while at the same time working as a synthesizer/drum machine/sampler rig, on top of that a virtual mixing desk with total recall. And also a mastering enviroment, provided that you have the needed equipment/listening/room treatment/knowledge. So I hope to be alive in 20 more years, to see and hear how the technology has developed by then. The trajectory sure looks promising.
  17. The mood in the Far Harbor expansion was amazing, some true Bioshock type shit I think FO4 had amazing environments and it just felt incredible to explore. The lore and artwork/attention to detail was very good. I don't think the main story line was anything to care about, this type of game to me was always about wandering around, messing with stuff. The human characters/mutants were the weakest part of the game besides the "story". The best part was the synthetics, and the plethora of weird creatures and robots. And I always though the world in the Fallout games would make for a really interesting setting for a TV-series, and lo and behold, I read just the other day that something within the Fallout world is planned for that format. I don't play video games anymore, because I think it's a way too absorbing/engrossing "hobby"(more of lifestyle really) And netflix alone is more than enough to keep you entertained. But yeah I will say there was some amazing games made for the ps4 era. Bloodborne in particular stands out for me.
  18. Yeah I noticed that as well, no chillout area. Well not that I care that used to be mostly a place for people to binge their laughing gas balloons. Not that they don't do their balloons now, it's even worse now lol. People passing out in the middle of the dance floor like dead zombies. Since the laughing gas has become one of the biggest revenues for the organizers, besides the entrance fee and smuggle beer. I can see how the chillout can be as you say an effective spot to recover, certainly on festivals. But on these short illegal forest raves, I don't think it's such a big deal. When people feel they've had enough, it's time to head home.
  19. Well one off or not, what has happened once can happen again. And take surprising directions, the future is unwritten and full of possibilites.
  20. Indeed but as I wrote: "radio/TV friendly edit/remix of a Goa Trance track" There was a deliberate effort from the record companies involved at the time to create interesting touch points between closely related genres. For example the Antiloop remix of Mars Needs Women. As a means to add variation and put the spotlight on other artists/genres within their stable of artists.(Or as a collaborarion between labels). Which I think was a very clever move, as it would no doubt attract a wider audience and fans of Antiloop who saw the Miranda albums with perhaps a sticker citing Antiloop remixes, or by checking the tracklist on the backside of the album. I could definitely see Afgin doing something similar with ASOT or Future Sound of Egypt, in a not too far off future.
