  1. Artist: Maan Title: Floral Cortex Label: Neogoa Records Date: May, 2020 1. Prelude: Havenless 2. Mother Moss 3. Instant Equilibrium 4. Re/Bells 5. Gardens With Flowers of Crazy Colors 6. The Wednesday Pond 7. Red Relic 8. Interstate Insects 9. Maven 10. Postlude: Antiquity Maan is Frode Ungar from Norway and this is his debut album. His Orbiter Ep from 2017 was very good as were his compilation tracks. Neogoa consistently releases quality goa trance and this is no exception. While not being exceptional at anything, it is extremely solid at everything. Ten tracks with the intro and outro being short sketches that had me wanting more. The goa gets started with Mother Moss and as the title insinuates this is more of a forest track with a goa feel. Loses its way a bit in the middle, but finishes strongly. Instant Equilibrium is an immediate stormer that feels very old school. Sounds like old X-Dream. It hardly deviates from its opening structure, but it's so bouncy and infectious I don't mind. I liked the metallic synth banging right out of the gate with Re/Bells and it maintains the goa flavor. The crystal clear sound and punchy bass of Garden With Flowers hits me immediately and the groove is similar to M-Run efforts. Most interesting track goes to The Wednesday Pond, sounding downtempo and progressive at the same time. Really a very zen experience. Red Relic combines a hammering bass and a frenetic synthline, but not a whole lot else. Insects is very high intensity with screeching synth leads and never fully takes a break, but keeps evolving. Maven closes it out with a super crisp sound and bouncy rhythms. Really liked the understated layers in this one. Like I said, not exceptional at anything, but great at everything. It's a solid goa album that I felt could've been better, but with numerous dalliances in other genres. I look forward to the next one. Neogoa Records Bandcamp

  2. Shadows is the album I was thinking of. I'm not sure it's really all that good, but it is certainly a faithful imitation of WCOOH, and even includes a remix of Freak. Worth a listen if you're seeking more of that particular sound, but don't set your expectations too high.

  7. There's nothing quite like their We Created Our Own Happiness album, but I would recommend albums that lean more towards trance like Organized Noise by Source and A Blueprint for Survival by Blue Planet Corporation There Will Be No Armageddon by Union Jack Wildlife On One by Art of Trance Early Platipus records compilations Beyond that you'll have to become a track hunter and spend your days digging for those single special tracks. :-)

  8. Artist: Talamasca Title: A Brief History of Goa Trance Label: Dacru Records Date: June, 2017 1. A Brief History of Goa Trance Astral Projection 2. A Brief History of Goa Trance Electric Universe 3. A Brief History of Goa Trance Etnica 4. A Brief History of Goa Trance Hallucinogen 5. A Brief History of Goa Trance Juno Reactor 6. A Brief History of Goa Trance Man With No Name 7. A Brief History of Goa Trance Oforia 8. A Brief History of Goa Trance Transwave 9. A Brief History of Goa Trance X-Dream "I live for this moment here." I mean... *sigh* What in the actual f*ck is he doing? I'm trying not to sound like a snobby purist, but how is this anything but sh*tting all over the artists he is said to admire? Calling this a brief history is like comparing the entire works of Mozart to the latest Katy Perry album. Talamasca is Cédric Dassulle and he left any and all of his goa credibility behind him long ago, let's just put that right out front. At this point he's like my bloated orange president with the lies. Remember his album Psychedelic Trance? Me neither cause it was far from it. I can best describe this effort as him taking parts of tracks from the artist he said had influence on him and "full-oning" it until any sense of soul and spirituality has been wrung out of it. Loaded with cliches including cringe inducing triplets and a cornballing of original melodies. It sounds exactly how you think it would. I mean...how in the f*ck do you make the melody from Etnica's Trip Tonite sound like it's full-on cheese regurgitation? How do you do that? Simon Posford is rolling over in his grave for the callous way you neutered LSD. Just because you insert the samples from the originals doesn't mean a connection is forged. This is what Hollywood does to once proud franchises so congratulations. This doesn't make me want to hear this album again. It makes me want to hear the originals to see how it was correctly done. You wanna honor those artists? Either re-learn how to make goa trance or just stay the hell away from their music. Psyshop
